    9/28/12 4:50 PM | Ricky Dimon
Simon mauls Monfils, to face Tipsarevic in semis Gilles Simon rolls over Gael Monfils in the Bangkok semifinals on Friday. Next up for Simon is Janko Tipsarevic, who dismissed Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.

    (4) Gilles Simon d. Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-1

Simon needed just one hour and 24 minutes to win an all-French affair with Monfils in the quarterfinals of the Bangkok Open on Friday afternoon. Monfils had been coming off two tough matches and he did not appear ready for a third in the early stages of his comeback to tennis. The world No. 45 at least made the first set relatively competitive, but he cracked with the pressure on while serving at 4-5.

From there it was all over, as Simon raced away in set two with the loss of only a single game. The No. 4 seed and 2009 champion broke his opponent three times in three tries; in fact, Monfils won a shocking four service points in the entire set. Simon held at 5-1 to book a spot in the semifinals against Janko Tipsarevic.

    (1) Janko Tipsarevic d. (5) Fernando Verdasco 7-6(5), 6-4

Tipsarevic came back from a break down in the first set before beating Verdasco in one hour and 50 minutes on Friday. Verdasco served at 81 percent in the first set and did not double-fault a single time, but he could not maintain an early break. The 23rd-ranked Spaniard was eventually pushed to a tiebreaker and he dropped a close one seven points to five.

A competitive second set saw Tipsarevic on the ropes on serve at 3-4. The top-seeded Serb faced a whole host of break points, but he saved all of them and held--which proved to be the match's final turning point. Tipsarevic promptly broke at 4-4 and finished off the proceedings one game later. The world No. 9 wrapped up his effort with seven aces and two double-faults.
