  • Gasquet overcomes Dimitrov in Bangkok second round

    9/28/12 3:42 AM | Ricky Dimon
Gasquet overcomes Dimitrov in Bangkok second round Richard Gasquet recovers from a set and a break down to beat Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday in Bangkok. Next up for Gasquet is a quarterfinal showdown with another up-and-comer, Bernard Tomic.

Richard Gasquet stormed back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to beat Grigor Dimitrov 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 in round two of the Bangkok Open on Thursday night. Gasquet was two points from a straight-set defeat before eventually prevailing in two hours and 15 minutes.

Dimitrov came out on fire, especially in the serving department. He fired nine aces without double-faulting in the opener while serving at 82 percent and dropping a mere four points in six service games. Gasquet managed to stay on level terms most of the way, but he buckled under the pressure at 5-6 and lost the set on an errant backhand.

When Dimitrov broke again midway through the second set, he appeared to be on the way to completing one of the best performances of his career. The 56th-ranked Bulgarian raced to 5-2 advantage, but that's when it all fell apart. Dimitrov nearly served it out at 5-3 only to surrender his serve for the first time all day. Unable to shake the disappointment, the 21-year-old did not win a single game in the final two games of the set.

Dimitrov briefly steadied himself in the decider by taking care of his first three service games, but Gasquet always had the momentum. The 14th-ranked Frenchman broke at 3-3 and refused to relinquish the lead. Dimitrov did well to fight off two match points at 3-5 only to see Gasquet serve out the proceedings at love one game later.

Gasquet withstood 21 Dimitrov aces while striking four aces of his own. Next up for Bangkok's No. 2 seed is Bernard Tomic, who survived Dudi Sela 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
