Gael Monfils takes out Viktor Troicki in two tough sets on Thursday in Bangkok. Monfils is joined in the quarterfinals by Milos Raonic, a straight-set winner over Ivo Karlovic.
Gael Monfils d. (6) Viktor Troicki 7-5, 7-5
Monfils' comeback to tennis continued to gain steam as he overcame Troicki after one hour and 52 minutes in the second round of the Bangkok Open on Thursday afternoon. But it was Troicki who got off to a fast start, racing to a 4-1, double-break lead in the first set. Monfils, however, stormed back to get on level terms and his opponent could not recover with the pressure on at 5-6. Troicki donated serve a third time to complete the collapse.
The 31st-ranked Serb did not go completely away in set two, during which one break of serve each was exchanged en route to another 5-5 deadlock. Monfils delivered a clutch hold and it was deja vu for Troicki in the 12th game. The unseeded Frenchman used his fifth break of the day to book a quarterfinal spot in style. Next up for Monfils is countryman Gilles Simon, who dismissed Go Soeda 6-4, 6-4.
(3) Milos Raonic d. Ivo Karlovic 7-6(4), 6-4
One break of serve was enough for Raonic to get past Karlovic in one hour and 30 minutes during second-round action on Thursday afternoon. Raonic, not too surprisingly, refused to give his opponent even a single break chance the entire way. Karlovic held his own serve in the same fashion throughout the first set, but the 6'10'' Croat went down seven points to four in the ensuing tiebreaker.
It was all but over after one game of the second. Out of nowhere, Raonic broke at love for a quick 1-0 advantage and never looked back. The 15th-ranked Canadian dropped a mere five points in his last five service games and he clinched victory with a routine hold at 5-4. Bangkok's third seed fired 14 aces to set up a quarterfinal meeting with 2010 finalist Jarkko Nieminen.
