Dolgopolov stumbles, Ferrer advances in Kuala Lumpur Top seed David Ferrer had a successful start to his 2012 Malaysian Open campaign with a straight set victory on Thursday.

David Ferrer (1) def. Alex Bogomolov Jr 6-4, 6-2

It was routine all the way for Spanish top seed David Ferrer. The world No. 5 came into Kuala Lumpur off of an impressive run to the semifinals of the US Open and a semifinal Davis Cup win over the United States, which featured two singles wins from Ferrer.

Russia's Alex Bogomolov Jr. offered little in the way of resistance. Ferrer breezed through the match in an hour and twenty-three minutes.

The Russian was actually able to snag a service break from Ferrer, but it came in the second set, which the world No. 5 dominated.

Ferrer finished the match with a single ace and serving at just 50%, but even so, he wasn't ever in danger of losing the match. The Spaniard will take on Dutchman Igor Sijsling in the quarterfinals.

Alejandro Falla def. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

No. 4 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov's woeful summer results continued into fall, with the Ukrainian falling in his first match at the Malaysian Open to Alejandro Falla.

This was Dolgopolov's first tournament since his third round ouster at the US Open. He helped the Falla cause by serving poorly for most of the match. The Ukrainian put in just 5 aces, a low number for a player rather well-known for his serving abilities.

Coming into Kuala Lumpur, Falla hadn't won a match since Wimbledon. He now heads into the quarterfinals, where he will take on Julien Benneteau of France.

I suppose Ferrer will win this title. I don't see anyone beating him.

Bogomolov's citizenship keeps changing. If I remember correctly, he became American when he married Ashley Harkelroad, then he changed to being Russian hoping to get on the DC, and Olympic team.

Tommy Haas did something similar coz he also wanted to be picked for the German Olympics team. .

Apologies Cheryl. My bad. Just spotted the Lotto logo so it must be Daveed - but apparently having trouble with a wisdom tooth.

Cheryl loves this picture of Ferrer. In fact, she even uses it for articles that have nothing to do with Ferrer!
