Viktor Troicki gets past Sergiy Stakhovsky in three sets on Tuesday in Bangkok. Troicki is joined in the second round by Bernard Tomic, who thrashed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
(6) Viktor Troicki d. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-3
Stakhovsky came close to pulling off a straight-set upset in the first round of the Bangkok Open on Tuesday afternoon, but Troicki rallied to prevail in two hours and 14 minutes. After exchanging two breaks each in the opening set, Stakhovsky took the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to four. The 96th-ranked Ukrainian soon found himself on the verge of victory when he saw a break point at 5-5 in the second.
Troicki managed to save it, and that's when the tied turned. The 31st-ranked Serb held, raced to 0-40 lead in the next game, then converted his second set-point opportunity when Stakhovsky struck an errant backhand. Troicki quickly broke at 2-1 the third to maintain his momentum and he eventually served out the proceedings at 5-3. Next up for the No. 6 seed is either Gael Monfils or Kevin Anderson.
(8) Bernard Tomic d. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-0, 6-2
The 2010 Bangkok champion lasted exactly one hour and 11 minutes in this year's edition, as Garcia-Lopez got blown out by Tomic during first-round action on Tuesday night. This one was competitive for all of two games; Tomic saved four break points in the first game of the match then converted his fourth break chance one game later. The 19-year-old Australian did not even yield his opponent a single game in the opener.
Garcia-Lopez, who stunned Rafael Nadal en route to the title two seasons ago, at least managed to hold serve twice in the second. But the 63rd-ranked Spaniard never had any real chance of getting on track as he squandered one more break opportunity in an effort to pull within striking distance. Tomic won 72 percent of his second-serve return points and he will go up against Dudi Sela on Thursday.
