  • Kuala Lumpur - Melzer withdraws, Baker upset

    9/24/12 5:36 PM | Cheryl Murray
Kuala Lumpur - Melzer withdraws, Baker upset Austria's Jurgen Melzer was down a set and a break to Vasek Pospisil before retiring from the match.

Vasek Pospisil def. Jurgen Melzer (8) 6-4, 2-0 (ret.)

Canada's Vasek Pospisil advanced to the second round when the injured Jurgen Melzer, Kuala Lumpur's 8th seed, retired with a thigh strain. After the match, the Austrian said that he was no longer able to take anything more than small steps without pain.

Pospisil, who is still ranked outside the top 100 at No. 122, will take his big serve into round two, where he will face American qualifier Michael Yani, who upset countryman Brian Baker on Monday night.

Michael Yani def. Brian Baker 6-3, 7-6(4)

After making a spectacular return to tennis during the clay season and again at Wimbledon, Baker's hot streak has cooled considerably.

He was broken three times in his first round match against world No. 238 Yani; once in the first set, which Yani dominated, and twice in the second. Baker lost the lead twice in the second frame before going down in the tiebreaker.

Pospisil developing in an interesting way, possibly promising to make the Spain-Canada tie even more interesting than when more eyes were on Milos.

Too bad about BB. Everybody has a bad day, but the older you are and the longer you're out, the more seriously you have to take them.

All good things come to an end. Baker will rebound, but at his age, it could be very slow or not at all. We'll see...
