  • Tsonga advances in Metz, Mayer tops Blake

    9/19/12 8:13 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga advances in Metz, Mayer tops Blake Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins his Metz opener against Clement Reix on Wednesday. Tsonga is joined in the quarterfinals by Florian Mayer , who overcame James Blake in three sets.

    (1) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. (Q) Clement Reix 6-3, 6-3

Tsonga, the No. 1 seed and defending champion, struck six aces and held all nine of his service games to beat Reix in the second round of the Moselle Open on Wednesday evening. Reix had qualified for the main draw and won the first ATP-level match of his career on Tuesday, upsetting Edouard Roger-Vasselin in three sets. But Tsonga, of course, was a much different proposition.

Reix, a 28-year-old Frenchman, dropped serve right away and quickly fell into a 3-0 hole in the first set. He took care of his serve from there but never could get back on level terms. Tsonga did not run away with the second quite as fast, but he broke at 3-3 and again at 5-3 to close out the match in style. Next up for the world No. 7 is a quarterfinal meeting with either Jesse Levine or Michael Berrer.

    (4) Florian Mayer d. James Blake 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4

Mayer overcame an early deficit to defeat Blake in one hour and 49 minutes during second-round action in Metz. Blake started fast, breaking for 3-1 in the opener only to give it right back in the fifth game. The 32-year-old American recovered in a tiebreaker, earning consecutive mini-breaks at 5-4 and 6-4 to take it. Mayer responded by racing to a 3-0 lead in set two, and his one break in the second game was all he needed.

That set the stage for a tough third set, which came down to break-point conversions. Mayer saved all six that he faced; three at 2-3 and three more at 3-4. The 25th-ranked German capitalized on his second chance of the set at 4-4 when Blake, who had been leading 40-15, netted a backhand. Mayer promptly served out the match at love to book a spot in the quarterfinals against either Andreas Seppi or Vincent Millot.
