If John Isner manages to defeat David Ferrer, the fifth rubber will decide the outcome of the Spain-United States Davis Cup semifinal.
Nicolas Almagro holds a slight lifetime edge (3-2) over Sam Querrey, but unfortunately for the American, both of their encounters on clay were won in straight sets by Almagro.
The Spainard, unsurprisingly, is best on the dirt, while Querrey is a hard-courter.
Querrey actually put up a good fight against David Ferrer in Friday's first rubber, but in the end, Ferrer was too good and won in four sets.
Querrey's teammate John Isner kept Almagro on court for a lengthy five-set match on Friday afternoon. The Spaniard ultimately won, but there is a possibility that he will be fatigued for his match with Querrey.
Prediction - Almagro for the win in 4.

good job taking a set, Isner, so that the fifth rubber didn't have to be played.

If Isner hadnt taken a set they would have played the 5th Rubber?

Can anyone tell me why the fifth (dead) rubber was not played? It is customary to play all five rubbers even if one side wins the first three.
Fans have paid to see two matches. Moreover, dead rubbers give members of the team not at first called on the chance to play for their country, and to gain experience (as Dancevic and Scholtz played the fifth rubber after Raonic had secured the tie for Canada). The audience in Montreal enjoyed it, and so did I on TV.
I hope the omission is not attributable to poor sportsmanship, or sulks.

they changed the rule at the end of 2010
if the 4th rubber goes past 3 sets, they don't (or dont have to) play the 5th rubber. If the 4th rubber is straight sets (or less), they play the 5th.

Thank you for the information. Do you know whether this is the first time the new rule has been taken advantage of?
jmk , 9/17/12 3:18 AM
nope, many times this year and last year. Happens all the time. Daviscup.com may have specific info.

Thanks again. It seems a sensible rule, and I notice that this year Uzbekhistan and Kazakhstan also followed it. Presumably if the tie is decided in the first three rubbers, the teams are obligated to play two dead rubbers. I couldn?t find the information in the Davis Cup site Flipbooks, so I?m grateful for your efforts at fathoming them!
