Monfils makes return to tennis in Metz The fall season begins this week in St. Petersburg, Russia and Metz, France. A relatively strong field is gathering in Metz, where Gael Monfils is making a long-awaited return to the tennis court.

Gael Monfils will be playing for the first time since May when he takes the court at the Moselle Open this week. Monfils and fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried headline the event in front of their home fans as the fall hard-court swing gets underway.

Of all his knee problems throughout his career, this could be Monfils' worst bout. He has not played a single match since losing to Brian Baker in Nice--meaning he missed the French Open, Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the U.S. Open. The world No. 44 just barely got seeded in Metz and he is in a bottom section of the draw with No. 2 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Tsonga is the top seed and two-time defending champion. The world No. 7 is coming off a disappointing U.S. Open that ended in a shock second-round loss to Martin Klizan. Tsonga awaits either Edouard Roger-Vasselin or a qualifier before potentially meeting either Jarkko Nieminen or Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the quarters.

Also receiving first-round byes in addition to Tsonga and Kohlschreiber are Marcel Granollers and Florian Mayer. Granollers, however, is a question mark after hobbling through a Davis Cup doubles match on Saturday with a calf injury. Mayer won two Davis Cup rubbers over the weekend in Hamburg as Germany stormed past Australia 3-2.
