  • Mayer, Stebe help Germany surge past Australia

Mayer, Stebe help Germany surge past Australia Germany quickly erases a 2-1 deficit against Australia on Sunday in Hamburg to book its spot in the 2013 Davis Cup World Group. Wins by Florian Mayer and Cedrik-Marcel Stebe complete the comeback.

Cedrik-Marcel Stebe rolled over Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 in the decisive fifth rubber on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg to send Germany past Australia and into the 2013 Davis Cup World Group. Stebe broke serve six times and needed two hours and five minutes to finish off the Germans' comeback from a 2-1 deficit in the playoff tie.

Both players came out slow and had a hard time taking care of their serves, but Stebe seized his third break of the day when it mattered most at 5-4. From there it was all Stebe, who rolled through the second with two more breaks. The German did not face a single break point in the second and third sets as he cruised to victory.

"At the beginning I was really nervous," Stebe said. "It was a great feeling to be out here. He's a great player but I just focused on my own game. I didn't give him many free points."

The clinching point was preceded by a convincing win for Florian Mayer over Bernard Tomic. Mayer cruised 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 to keep the host nation alive and set the stage for Stebe's heroics.
