John Isner will take on Spain's top healthy player, David Ferrer, as the US team looks to stay alive in this weekend's tie.
Bob and Mike Bryan kept American hopes alive with a win in Saturday's doubles match over Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers, but the fate of the team will rest with John Isner in the first of two Sunday rubbers.
Isner will take on David Ferrer, a US Open semifinalist. The world No. 10 put up a valiant effort against Nicolas Almagro on Friday, but he lost the second rubber in give sets after carrying the US squad past Switzerland and France in the early rounds.
All hope is not lost for Isner. He did manage to get his first win in four tries over Ferrer last year on the hard courts of Bercy. But with Ferrer playing at home on his favored clay, a second straight win for the towering American might be asking too much.
Ferrer is playing some of the best tennis of his career. He sits at No. 5 in the world and comes into this rubber with the confidence of knowing that the surface suits his game far more than it does Isner's.
Prediction - Ferrer to wrap up the tie for the Spanish side in four sets.
