David Ferrer, the star of the Spanish squad this year, posted a win over American John Isner to give his team a chance at a fourth title in the last five years.
The American Davis Cup team has been enjoying a bit of a Cinderella run in 2012. With John Isner and the Bryan brothers leading the way, the US squad upset Switzerland and France on enemy soil, but they didn't have enough to get past the defending champs.
Bob and Mike Bryan kept the US side in the tie with a win in doubles on Saturday, but Isner couldn't get it done against world No. 5 Ferrer, with the Spaniard winning 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Isner actually took an early lead in this rubber. Ferrer wasn't able to keep up with the Isner serve in the first set tiebreaker and went down a set before rebounding in the second.
Spain will travel to the Czech Republic for the final; the Czechs defeated the Argentines in Buenos Aires on Sunday.
