  • Berdych clinches tie for Czech Republic

Berdych clinches tie for Czech Republic World No. 6 Tomas Berdych secured a Davis Cup final berth for the Czech Republic, upending Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq in reverse singles. The Czechs move on to contest the final against defending champion Spain in November.

World No. 6 Tomas Berdych earned his third point of the semifinal after defeating Argentine Carlos Berlocq in straight sets. The 26-year-old had leveled the tie on Friday, having rallied to defeat world No. 11 Juan Monaco in five sets. A successful outing with veteran compatriot Radek Stepanek in doubles put the squad ahead 2-1 on Saturday.

Berdych beat Berlocq, a replacement for an injured world No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro, in two hours and 45 minutes, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. He completed the winning singles effort with six aces and 46 winners.

"We made it and that was the goal we brought in here, to try the almost impossible and try and win here," Berdych said. "The whole team had that belief that we could make it. It’s not impossible to win in Argentina as we proved.

"We were definitely not the favorites for the tie but it’s not important every time for my point of view. I was feeling really, really well coming from the States, playing the semifinals there beating Roger Federer, playing very close match against the winner of the US Open, Andy Murray, so I was feeling really good.

"I wanted to show it here that my game is on top and I can play well. I did it, won my two singles, made half a point in the doubles and that’s it, what we needed."

The Czechs are slated to host defending champion Spain, a winner over the United States, at home in late November.
