World No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro won the first point for home nation Argentina in its semifinal tie against the Czech Republic. Del Potro recorded a straight-sets victory over veteran Radek Stepanek on Friday.
World No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro secured a key singles victory for Argentina, having upended Czech veteran Radek Stepanek in straight sets. The 23-year-old converted five of seven break points en route to a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win in two hours and 41 minutes.
"To play here in my country with this fantastic crowd is amazing for me. I really enjoyed it," Del Potro commented. "I played really well. I took all my opportunities to break his serve."
Del Potro completed the match with seven aces and 25 winners.
The tie is set to continue as world No. 6 Tomas Berdych takes on world No. 11 Juan Monaco in the second singles rubber.
