  • Ferrer happy to live in Nadal's tennis shadow

    9/7/12 10:11 PM | Johan Lindahl
Ferrer happy to live in Nadal's tennis shadow US Open semifinalist David Ferrer has no problem in living his career in the overwhelming shadow of Rafael Nadal, the injured king of Spanish tennis.

Scampering retriever Ferrer has proved himself the match of most in the world. And with Nadal missing through his knee injury, his compatriot is carrying Iberian honour in New York.

"I think Rafael is very, very important for us because he's the best player of history in Spain and one of the best of the world. I don't care is without Rafael I was the number one of Spain.

"I've learned a lot with him, I'm close to him, In Spain, the people are looking at the tennis of Rafael in these moments, and I think it's very good for us, for the other players."

Ferrer has nothing at all bad to say about his compatriot. "Rafael, he is a very good person, and of course he deserve everything."

It's because Rafa doesn't talk crap like "I had to carry my team mates to victory" like some trash talking idiots.

jean , 9/8/12 3:42 AM

Nadal is mostly absent from Davis Cup ties these days. He only tries to come in at the end to close (and get the glory) after Ferrer, Lopez etc have done the hard work.

chr18 , 9/8/12 4:12 AM

^^^ Wrong. Rafa was there in the early rounds in 2011, at Belgium, when he's just back from injury. He was also there in the early rounds against Serbia in 2009. He, together with Feli and Verdasco, had specifically mentioned that they're not taking part in the DC ties this year. It was the DC captain who was hoping that Rafa could take part in the DC SF. Rafa doesn't need all these glories, he has more then enough of DC glory, having participated and won three or four DC trophies with his DC team for Spain. As usual, chr18 with all his craps, trying to smear Rafa's reputation.

luckystar , 9/8/12 4:42 AM

Rogie will play DC only when he has no chance of winning slams. He played a couple of DCs in the recent past only to qualify for Olympics. This despite the fact that without him the Swiss team is weak. Rogie loves money and glory, not his country. He even faked a back disability to avoid military duty.
Rafa has played DC when he is not injured or not so injured that he is not better than other members of the team. It must be remembered that Spain has plenty of good players and should Rafa play when he is at 80% or below it will be depriving Spain of fielding another player with better chances. See what happened when an injured Djoko played against Argentina in 2011 in the DC semi.

holdserve , 9/8/12 5:07 AM

Luckystar, what are you doing?? You're not actually trying to present facts in response to crap18's totally fabricated post, are you? It's rose-tinted glasses are programmed not to allow facts and truths to filter through. Does make for a good laugh though I must admit.

jean , 9/8/12 5:09 AM

Lucky's just a reasonable poster who is willing to make a real argument with facts. She also has the patience of a saint! I don't think she is trying to reason with this person, as much as she is standing up for Rafa and his record.

Nativenewyorker , 9/8/12 7:38 AM

Careful, Ferru, there's a Federista called @tomnjerry who resents your good relationship with Rafa.............

Take that, haters!!!!

rafaisthebest , 9/8/12 8:58 AM

Rafa is a team player and will only pull out of DC when he is injured unlike someone who only played one single tie just to qualify for the olympics. See you in DC in 2015 Rog, for your olympic qualification. The spanish team are the ones who know what Rafa means to them You will never hear Wawa pay Roger such compliments because he knows that Roger dumps on him when they lose and takes the credit when they win, like claiming to win the doubles gold on his own.

Fedfans are the last people to criticise anyone for not playing DC. Moreover, Rafa doesn't say he carried his team to victory unlike someone who said it was all Wawas fault that they got drubbed by the Americans.

nadline , 9/8/12 9:10 AM

For goodness sake, Spain has such strength in depth, they don't need Rafa to turn up EVERY time.
Unlike UK :(

deuce , 9/8/12 9:13 AM

chr18, Rafa's does not need surgery, according to his doctor:

"Whenever there's a broken muscle you have to get surgery, but when it is just an injury like this, the percentage of recovery with treatment is very high. :) We have surgery only when the muscles are very damaged and this is not the case."

nadline , 9/8/12 9:40 AM

Lol now it's a 'broken muscle'. Last I heard it was a torn tendon. The tendon attaches the muscle to the bone. Maybe you're using google translation again huh? My speculation is that with his playing style it will recur and next time the tear will be worse. Regarding Davis Cup, Nadal doesn't have to carry his team to victory. Fer'dasco, Ferrer and Lopez won the final in Argentina '08 on hc without him. Nadal missed the tie in Austin last year as Ferrer and Lopez won it but Nadal showed up for the clay home ties. Hence my point that Nadal lets the others do the hard work but he ends up with a tidy DC resume. Fed does have to carry his team to a win. When last have they won a tie if he didn't play?

chr18 , 9/8/12 2:04 PM

chr18 your point?
I don't know whether you realize how irrational you are but in the light of scoretracker's admission, you probably don't. But as you are a doctorate from treetop Univ, let me try to explain. Nadal doesn't play DC when he is injured. He plays whenever he can.
Fed only plays when he needs to qualify for Olympics. He doesn't play even when he can.
He has not missed a single slam since 2000 and he has this incredible semi and quarter streak. So clearly he is never injured or even if injured, not so badly that he is not better than any other Swiss player.
So he could and should have played in every DC.
Rafa has missed several slams with injuries, even this year's olympics. Further when he is injured, he may not be better than the next Spaniard.
So he should and did miss some DC ties.
Your post about your "point" proves that the only point you ever make in any post is that you are a hater. And of course that your lack of logic is embarrassing ( maybe not embarrassing for you as you don't have enough logic to know that you don't have logic)

holdserve , 9/8/12 2:39 PM

^^^Well said holdserve, couldn't say it any better!

luckystar , 9/8/12 2:44 PM

hahahahaah what a stupid argument !!! the only thing that stands out is : nadal is the one who takes the pain of including davis cup in his schedules , travels to different corners of the globe to serve his country as much as he can and drains himself in the process ! federer on the other hand NEVER NEVER sacrifices to play DC ties, THAT IS A FACT.

After us open 2011, when rafa was soo tired he still showed up for DC against france :O Again, after a grueling run that included titles at RG, olympics, wimbledon rafa again showed up for davis cup semi against USA in 2008 :O ! no wonder his knees give up,the guy is sacrificing his knees for his country ! RESPECT

Only nole is the one who also makes commendable efforts to serve his country!
Had rafa been like federer in terms of skipping so many DC ties, his conditioning would have been better over the years. Its absurdly tough to travel across the globe and disrupt your playing schedule time and time again..

For rafa it does not matter if its the semi final or rnd 1 od DC ! in 2011 he played against belgium on an indoor hard court... THE GUY IS RELENTLESS when is comes to serving his country..he does not care the consequences and the mishap is that his reward is bad knees :(

vamosrafa , 9/8/12 2:49 PM

Great point, fed's amazing numbers for not missing a slam and those incredible streaks are not only the result of his less-taxing playing style and fitness and wise scheduling but also due to the fact that he does not go through the pains of playing davis cups. No wonder other players like nole and delpo also get drained because they have davis cup on their schedules.

I remmeber fed chickened out in a tie against spain ! it was to be held in march on clay and rafa was ready...fed never showed up !!!

I am sure had fed been showing like rafa in DC ties, he would have been drained much more often

vamosrafa , 9/8/12 2:53 PM

^^^ Well said, vamosrafa.

Rafa had to be there in last year's DC final against Argentina. It's not that he wants all the glory for himself. If he's not there to beat Delpo in the third singles rubber, Spain might be at risk of losing the final; Delpo is one formidable force on clay, I'm afraid Almagro or Verdasco or Lopez couldn't handle that Delpo on clay.

luckystar , 9/8/12 3:01 PM

Why should Fed play DC when there's very little chance of winning? He's played the relegation ties a lot. Compare the Spanish team to the Swiss team. Would Nadal play if the teams were reversed? And yes if Fed had the Spanish team around him he'd have 5 or 6 DC titles. Does Murray play a lot when there's no chance of winning? I doubt it. And oh yes that was a very difficult tie in Belgium that Nadal showed up for. What with that tennis giant Ollie Rochus fronting the team and all. Nadal did say last year that he wouldn't play DC this year but after pulling out of the Open he said he would play against USA on clay if he was healthy and the coach picked him. Let's see if Spain has to go to Argentina for the final again if Nadal goes this time.

chr18 , 9/8/12 3:07 PM

You can be sure Rafa would have played if the teams were reversed. Rafa's team loves him. His captain is happy with him.
Same cannot be said about Fed. His captain had bitterly complained about him. When you are the only great player from your country, you cannot make excuses and not play especially when you probably have to play only one or two ties per year. Unlike Spain who go deep every year because they have many good players.
We know how Fed threw his matches this year in a DC tie so he wouldn't have to play further ties. And then tried to blame Wawa.
Strange how he is in awesome form in matches which matter to him but loses to US players on clay in a DC tie. What a selfish and self centered player he is!
None of the other top players can match him in self centeredness. Measured on that parameter, he is the GOAT.

holdserve , 9/8/12 3:20 PM

Oh doc yer soooo transparent.

Why should Spain send their best team to Austin to play that 2nd rate US squad in Austin last year??? It would have been an even bigger embarrassment doc. Surely you wouldnt want that now? It was already bad enough with the US thinking that indoor fake tennis surface would be enough to beat the best tennis country in the world.

Gonna be painful enough next week for that lot on the road on the red clay in Spain. LOL

Poor doc18! Stick to golf and perhaps spend some more time with "the family".

#TrollingObviously

Conspirator , 9/8/12 3:33 PM

Rafa does not need to jsutify himself to rabid Fedfans, so let chr18 have his say, it won't affect Rafa in the slightest. I think he did his thesis on 'Misrepresenting Facts' and 'Witch Hunting'.

nadline , 9/8/12 3:39 PM

He got his thesis from a box of Cracker Jacks.

Conspirator , 9/8/12 3:53 PM

LOLOLOL what nonsense !!! point is, it does not matter whom do you face in the tie, the problem is that it is awfully tough to sacrifice your celendars, do the necessary travelling and disrupt your preparations for the upcoming tournaments ! rafa does not care, he serves his country !! federer would never sacrifice because he is SELFISH , undeniable !

swiss have stan and he can win a singles rubber here and there. fed and stan have a great doubles team and with some efforts , surely they can win a lot of ties ! federer gets zero marks for effort! look at djokovic, how hard that guy tries to help serbia ! fell on the court against delpo last year in pain ! dont tell me the serbian team is so strong without djo that can skip it, it is NOT !

OF COURSE rafa would play in every tie possible regardless of his squad, he can help his team winning two singles ties and hope the other player can sumhow win one singles or his team scores a win in the doubles where you always have a chance !!

vamosrafa , 9/8/12 3:53 PM

Fed is an embarrassment to what Davis Cup stands for.

'why would fed play DC when there is little chance of winning' MUAHAHAHAH is fed that big a coward and a loser that he wont play where the chances of winning are low..

why on earth did federer kept on playing french open then?? HAHAHAHAH after RG 2008, federer should have never returned to that court because the chances of winnign RG were slimmer than swiss winning DC LOL ...but lucky for fed God was merciful enough to stop rafa in week 1 of RG 2009 hahahaha

vamosrafa , 9/8/12 3:58 PM

Why should Ferrer feel bad about living in Rafa's shadow? After all he has Federer to keep him company!

holdserve , 9/8/12 4:05 PM

vamosrafa,
Serbia has done well at DC without Djoker. Stan is no Tipsy, he's more of a Troicki. Plus Nenad Zimonjic is a terrific doubles player so please don't compare Djoker's supporting cast to Fed's. Also don't compare DC which is a team competition to a GS. It's ridiculous to do so.

Conspirator,
Don't take it out on me that you're a lonely person. Try to find a spouse and have some kids. It will change your life.

Nadal is the true #1 because he's won the highest % of matches against the top 10. That is a better measure of who is best not the transient ranking points over 52 weeks which do not take into account injury time out and just one point can make a difference in the hierachy.

Just taking the top 4, this is their % of success against the current top 10:

Rafa............ W 98 L 42 = 70%
Roger.......... W 89 L 48 = 65%
Nole........... W 70 L 57 = 55%
Andy........... W 44 L 45 = 50%

So the substantive #1 in Nadal.

nadline , 9/9/12 10:35 AM

So the substantive #1 IS Nadal.

nadline , 9/9/12 10:52 AM

The biased media like Bodo may keep writing about Fed as the GOAT but when time lends objectivity to the analysis, history will record Rafa as the greatest of this generation.

In a period of 8 years (2004-2012) Nadal has played in 14 DC ties, in 27 matches. In a period of 13 years (1999-2012) Federer has played in 21 ties, in 55 matches. The higher average number of matches per year played by Federer reflects the fact that he often plays doubles as well as two singles matches, whereas it is not necessary for Nadal to do so. The records demonstrate that both players do their best to represent their countries. Don?t the Fedal fans on this site ever get tired of trying to denigrate the achievements of the other?

jmk , 9/10/12 2:03 AM

btw I came to this thread because I'm interested in Ferrer, but he was lost from view immediately

jmk , 9/10/12 3:00 AM

There are lies, damn lies and statistical lies. jmk's stats fall in the 3rd category. Do the records reveal that both players do their best? No, most certainly not.
Fed played every Davis cup tie in the early part of his career but chose to play sparingly once he became a big star and his priority was personal glory and money.
But Rafa when not injured has always played. When injured, he stays out either because he can't play (like this time) or because another (fit) player would better represent than an injured Rafa.
For some thoughts along these lines:
http://www.tennis-x.com/xblog/2009-12-30/2847.php

holdserve , 9/10/12 4:02 AM

Davis cup is a trash, if they want to make it an interesting one play it once in 2 years or play 3 sets per match, ridiculous.

vmm , 9/11/12 4:31 AM

Davis cup is not a trash.... it is a team work.... if you are good as an individual but not as a team, you are really a trash in my opinion.... so damn selfish and that what where arrogant comes from...

tettylds , 9/11/12 5:47 AM

We know why Davis Cup is trash, don't we? It's because Stan cannot provide sufficient support to Fed to win it! It's all Wawa's fault.........

rafaisthebest , 9/11/12 12:45 PM

Davis Cup is still interesting, but yes it would be better if held every 2 or 3 years

unless Ferrer is completely gassed, Spain will roll. Ferrer will win both of his singles easily.

RickyDimon , 9/11/12 5:42 PM

Federer is joining the DC team mates tomorrow for their tie..

chenna21 , 9/11/12 6:11 PM

Why would it be better for Davis Cup to be held every 2or 3 years? Would that improve Switzerland's chances? If this suggestion is supposed to be the answer to the Tour's calendar congestion problems then I suggest you look at WHOLE ATP/ITF calendar, not just single out Davis Cup.

The same disparaging nonsense was written about Olympics tennis until Rafa made it sexy to win Olympics single gold, now everybody wants a piece of it.......
