  • Berdych stuns Federer in massive US Open upset

    9/6/12 12:38 PM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych stuns Federer in massive US Open upset Tomas Berdych has once again played spoiler to Roger Federer's Grand Slam plans, with the Czech dispatching the world No. 1 for a spot in the semifinals.

In the shock of the tournament so far, world No. 6 Tomas Berdych dispatched top seed Roger Federer 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

For two sets and part of the third, it actually appeared that Federer would be taken out in straight sets. The Wimbledon champion served poorly, hitting three double faults to just two aces in the first two frames. But it was Berdych's own aggressive play that put him ahead.

Berdych was clearly outhitting Federer off the ground. The Czech managed to hit the cover off the ball without racking up too many unforced errors and as a result jumped out to the commanding 2 sets to 0 lead.

Federer got down a break early in the third set, but in true champion's style he staged an impressive comeback. He earned the break back to put the set back on level terms, and got another set-winning break on a horrific service game from Berdych in which the underdog double-faulted on break point.

Unfortunately for the Federer camp, the resurgence was short-lived. Berdych did not lose his head but came back in the fourth as steady as ever. He secured the only break early in the set to take the win.

Berdych will take on world No. 4 Andy Murray in the semis.

Kind of saw this coming. Big hitters can hit anybody off the court when they're on.

chr18 , 9/6/12 1:47 PM

I'm not sure I saw it coming, but it's not a huge surprise either. Also, Federer didn't play very well and that sort of helped the Berdych cause.

cherylmurray , 9/6/12 2:08 PM

Haha Cheryl be careful you'll be accused of making excuses for Fed's loss or saying that the match is always on his racket. When I saw the draw this was the guy that caught my attention because I knew he could get hot and he's beaten Fed at Wimbledon before. A replay of that match really. Berdy is an enigma. He'll probably choke against Murray but one never knows.

chr18 , 9/6/12 2:30 PM

anybody seen scoretracker?

rfzr , 9/6/12 3:01 PM

Agree with Chr18

sabs , 9/6/12 3:14 PM

Berdych was pretty ok. Federer was terrible, his game reminded me how he played on RG. Don't what happened to him but I don't think those 2 extra days off would be the whole reason. Just a bad day.

Now that he is out and Nadal injured, I really hope Andy can get the title, it's kind of now or never situation for him.

Emiliano55 , 9/6/12 3:16 PM

Berdych played pretty well, except for those horrid games in the third set. But you just can't deny that Fed was terrible. I'm not making excuses, just telling it like it is.

cherylmurray , 9/6/12 3:27 PM

Hmmmm strange... Now all the Fed fans are jumping in Muzza's wagon??
...or is it "Anyone but Nole" mantra :)))))

zare , 9/6/12 3:28 PM

Berdych played very well last night (it was his night). Although I'm sorry to see Roger not making it though this time, he did make a few very cool and very entertaining shots before this US OPEN was "all over" for the FED. The FED Win was not meant to be this time, still, I would like to thank Roger for all the fun I have had watching his play so far this year. It is FUNTASTIC being a FEDfan! Until the next time, take heart FEDfans our Champion is still "well" the BEST (in our Hearts). C'MON FED, take Heart! :) Later Budd. :)

sky , 9/6/12 3:29 PM

It's often difficult to say definitvely that one played bad vs. the other playing good.

Fed wasn't that bad I don't think. A lot of the points were amazing from both sides and it was a very entertaining match overall. Fed served at 63% with 7 aces compared to 59% for Berdy so not so terrible. Fed had 44 winners to 40 unforced errors. However Berdy forced Fed to be more aggressive which naturally leads to more errors.

chr18, 9/6/12 1:47 PM is right (did I just say that???). Big hitters CAN beat anyone when they are at their best especially Berdych. He peaked at the right time.

Don't worry, indoor season will be here soon. ;)

Conspirator , 9/6/12 3:42 PM

obviously the most news-worthy result of the tournament, but Klizan over Tsonga was a WAY bigger upset

RickyDimon , 9/6/12 3:45 PM

zare... nonsensical as usual.

willmw101 , 9/6/12 4:04 PM

i don't think Fed was terrible, but he certainly wasn't good.

kind of like that "monster" thing that he talked about a few years ago. He created unrealistic expectations for himself after Wimbledon, the Olympics, and Cincinnati. His US Open performance was more along the lines of how he performed throughout much of 2011 and early 2012. Still surprising, but not shocking.

RickyDimon , 9/6/12 4:06 PM

It's more surprising that Berdych held it together after that third set than that Federer didn't play his best. He wasn't at his best at the French either, so it's not like he's been unbeatable this year.

But Berdych has been quite bad for part of the year. You have to tip your hat that he held on after losing 2 service breaks in the third.

cherylmurray , 9/6/12 4:12 PM

^^^^ had something to do with the guy on the other side of the net.

Conspirator , 9/6/12 4:12 PM

^^^directed to Ricky's post (not Cheryl's)

Conspirator , 9/6/12 4:13 PM

yep, that was shocking. I was sure Berdych was done when he gave the break back back in the 3rd, then especially when he got broken AGAIN in the third, then especially when he LOST the 3rd!

RickyDimon , 9/6/12 4:32 PM

Kind of saw this coming. Big hitters can hit anybody off the court when they're on.
Crap18 9/6/12 1:47 PM

Oh yeah, sure you did!! What happened?? No bad poetry this time???

jean , 9/6/12 4:43 PM

Yeah, Ricky, I felt the same way. Muzz came back after being a set and two breaks down and I'm so used to Fed coming back from two sets down - he's done it eight times before. When Fed broke back to tie in the 3rd, I thought here we go again. He's a hard knockout to say the least.

I agree that Fed didn't play well, but there's no way you can ignore Berdy not only playing well but mentally keeping it together. It's still a tall task to take out Fed in a slam and Berdy hasn't always been able to be mentally tough enough to get it done.

I give Berdy a lot of credit for not losing it after Fed took the third set. I also think that Fed hasn't been playing that great. He managed to get it done at Wimbledon after not having won a slam in over two years. But that didn't mean that he was going to start winning slams again.

This was a reality check. I don't know if Berdy will be able to continue to play well against Murray. That remains to be seen.

Nativenewyorker , 9/6/12 9:00 PM

zare, here's a Fed fan wishing for Delpo or Djoko to win the title. So you see every Fed fan is not ''in Murray's wagon''

abhirf , 9/6/12 9:34 PM

^ I am neither a Murray or a Nole fan. I'd rather be in the Rafa camp, and I don't even particularly like him, than hop on the Murray wagon!!

aegis , 9/6/12 9:49 PM

@aegis, same here. I don't dislike Nadal, but his fans make it very difficult to like him coz they just cannot keep their mouths shut when they decide to unload with their nasty barbs and criticisms on Federer. It's all due to jealousy. They would rather see no-personality Murray beat Fed and jump on his bandwagon. I guess it's only fair to do so, coz the Murray fans here jump on Nadal's and djokovic's bandwagon.

There's one decent Murray fan on here, Alex. The other is two-faced, and holds onto grudges and the criticisms of Fed grows more each time he beats Murray. Glad they didn't get the satisfaction of seeing Murray beat Fed.

Fed fans make it easy to hate fed.

jean , 9/7/12 5:00 AM

jean,

Bless your heart for saying this! Fans don't make it hard for anyone to like or dislike a player. These are two entirely separate things. By that reasoning, I should hate Fed with a passion because of some of his rabid fans and the hatespeak they spew out on this site about Rafa. But I don't dislike Fed and nothing will change that. No matter how awful some of his fans are, that doesn't influence how I feel about him. Two entirely different and unrelated things.

It seems that this line of reasoning is just an excuse to hate Rafa and his fans. How convenient!

Nativenewyorker , 9/7/12 5:55 AM

jean,

I know to whom you were directing your comments! It deserved a sarcastic response, but I don't hate Fed. I despise his fans who are so cruel, hateful and mean-spirited in their comments.

I just am sick of reading these endless and boring attacks on Rafa fans. It's like a broken record. If you don't like it, then leave! Otherwise deal with it like we have had to deal with the disgusting comments from Fed fans

Nativenewyorker , 9/7/12 5:58 AM

Don't know why Berdy's win is being described as a massive shock, disrespectful to Berdy imo. Anyone who follows tennis would know that Berdy has always been a thorn in his match-ups with Fed.

As for the comments about Rafans, don't dignify them with a response.............the indoor season is just around the corner, let them take comfort in that.

#WTFisthenewslam

rafaisthebest , 9/7/12 6:28 AM

Ha ha, somebody compared Berdy to Rosol. Must be a Fed fan!

holdserve , 9/7/12 6:51 AM

I dislike Fed because he is so smug and arrogant. Has no respect for others, constantly discounting them and encouraging hate from his followers ( look at his site).
One of my friends compared him with Lord Voldemort and his fans with the death eaters. The Fed fans are really like death eaters.
Rafa is like Harry Potter ruling through love. And a boy potter defeated Voldemort in his prime.

holdserve , 9/7/12 6:56 AM

^^^^hence the endless, bitter, sniping and boomerang Rafa put-downs.

rafaisthebest , 9/7/12 7:06 AM

ritb,

I think you're right. I make a special effort to ignore the baiting comments, but it really gets boring reading the same nonsense over and over about how it's hard to like Rafa because of his fans. Either you like him or you don't! But don't blame his fans.

I don't contribute to the toxic atmosphere by not going after Fed. I don't hate him. I don't hate any player. I don't hate people that I don't know or have never met. Nobody wins in this sniping and bickering back and forth.

Bo ld article saying neither Rafa or Fed will ever win a HC slam again, yes chances are bleak but never say never. Rafa has a better chance at AO and Fed better chance at USO

sanju , 9/7/12 10:11 AM

well they can say difficult but never?how can they say never.I agree its difficult but I think Rafa has a shot at AO and Fed at USO.

Fed at AO unlikely as its slower and Rafa at USO unlikely as its faster

Fed chances are at Wimby, USO
Rafa at RG, AO, Wimby
Djoko at AO, USO, RG
Murray at AO, USO, Wimby

sanju , 9/7/12 10:15 AM

Actually there's a better chance of beating Nole on a fast hard court than on a slower one. I think the USO favors the big servers and big hitters. It's more difficult to defend against them on a fast court. Those giants like Raonic, Isner, Delpo and Berdych all can serve and hit big but what they lack is good movements. If we can have one with good movements, then I'm afraid the top four guys would run into problems at the USO.

I don't think Fed and Rafa have no chances of winning the USO, Nole may not always play like he does now. Fedal can still beat anyone when their games are on, it's a matter of planning their schedules well and conserving energy to be at their best during the slams.

luckystar , 9/7/12 10:54 AM

sanju, I am amazed that you think the chances are bleak for either Rafa or Roger to win a h/c slam again. Rafa made the finals of the USO and AO back to back and nearly won the AO this year and whilst I hope Federer doesn't win another slam on any surface, I think it's silly to discount someone with 17 slams, especially 11 on h/c.

These articles come out everytime something happens and they always go to the extreme. When Rafa is fit he is hard to beat. Everyone knows that.

luckystar, what we have are big servers who are lacking in movement, it's pointless saying IF we can had one big server with good movement he would cause the big four problems, because we haven't got a big server with good movement. IF is the operative word.

nadline , 9/7/12 11:24 AM

"They would rather see no-personality Murray beat Fed and jump on his bandwagon."

Scoretracker, Andy has more personality in his right pinky than you have everywhere.
Judging from your bland, tedious, sanctimonious drivel that you think worth airing on this site.
And you better not be accusing me of being 2 faced as i have had just about enough of your tiresome humourless rubbish.

Twinge , 9/7/12 1:10 PM

nadline, one person I can think of is Tsonga. He moves well, can serve and hit big, he's even very good at the net. The problem with him is he sometimes go for broke and makes some strange shot selections. He did put up a good show against Fed at WTF final last year; if only he can play like that more often! If I'm not wrong, Tsonga is the only guy who beats all the top four guys in slams: he beat Rafa and Murray at AO2008, beats Nole at AO2010; beats Fed at Wimbledon 2011. What he needs is a coach to give him a sense of direction, and some tactical advices. Also one area he can improve on is his ROS.

luckystar , 9/7/12 1:29 PM

OK, but Tsonga had a coach until recently why has he not even won one slam beating all these people you say he is equipped to beat? Maybe you should apply for the job.

nadline , 9/7/12 2:30 PM

I don't know whether Rafa can win AO and USO again but frankly if I were making decisions for Rafa, I would tell him to focus on RG and Wimby so he could extend his career. First of all that would be easier on his body. Secondly, he is far above the competition at RG and above the competition at Wimby. But for his knee problem this year which was troubling him from AO, he would have won Wimby. If a past 30 Fed could do it, clearly the rest of the competition isn't that comfortable on grass.
If Rafa tries for minimal play on hard courts leaving them to Nole, Muzza , Fed, Delpo and others and focuses his game on clay and grass, he could win another 6 or 7 gs.

holdserve , 9/7/12 3:20 PM

^^^ Tsonga has the tools to beat the top guys, however he doesn't have the right mindset and the tactical knowhow. He fired his coaches because he felt they couldn't help him to reach the next level. He was already giving Fed, Nole, Rafa all sorts of problems when he's playing well. If he can find a coach who can help him reaches his full potential, he may be the person filling in the gap should one of the top four guys falls out of that elite group.

I sometimes feels that Delpo and Berdych are more serious with their careers than Tsonga is. How can he assume that he'll be fine without a coach at this stage of his career? He's no Federer, even Murray needs a coach and has found a good one in Lendl.

luckystar , 9/7/12 3:25 PM

If Muzza wins this USO, he will clearly be a huge contender at every slam in 2013. So chances are two out of the three Rafa, Nole and Muzza will be in every final and they will fight each other to the death. So they should mark out territories so they can live to fight another day. At least Rafa should in the interests of his career.

holdserve , 9/7/12 3:28 PM

Loved this exchange in Berdy's post-match presser...

Q. One of the other big upsets this year was Lukas Rosol beating Nadal at Wimbledon. Do you think there is something in the Czech mentality that sort of makes you guys less afraid of big wins than other countries?

TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I just hope you're not comparing me with Lukas Rosol. Do you? (Laughter.)

Q. No, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying...

TOMAS BERDYCH: You did. You just said that there was a big upset and Rosol will beat Nadal and then you mentioned my match here.

Q. Okay.

TOMAS BERDYCH: Okay, good. So first of all, I don't think that we are in the same position, that it's actually that big upset. But all right, you said that. Well, I don't know what else to say. I mean, is it something wrong that we are from Czech and beating big guys? No? Good. Okay.

I bet the reporter was British because the British press have this zenophobic attitude to all other nations, putting everyone in compartments. I'm glad Berdy didn't let it pass.

nadline , 9/7/12 4:06 PM

An upset, yes, but "massive"?

Steady on, Cheryl.

Don't confuse being massively upset with a massive upset :)

Rosol d. Nadal = massive upset

alex , 9/7/12 10:25 PM

Have to say, though, I was looking forward to muzz vs fed.

Apart from that, I try to see the best in all the players but have to work hard on berdych after the time he wouldn't shake almagro's hand.

Hate to say it, but I always like to see muzz avoiding the big bird. Muzz has a significantly better h2h against roger than against him :(

alex , 9/7/12 10:39 PM

I just read that article by Filip Bondy... LOL. That guy is really lucky to be writing on a newspaper, indeed.

Emiliano55 , 9/7/12 11:13 PM

Didn't "surprise" me at all that Berdych beat Fed. In fact, I rather expected it. He did it at Wimbledon--another BIG STAGE and on a fast surface. Only wish that when Fed loses--yes, not a rare occurence---he would give his opponent some credit. He seldom ever has the graciousness to acknowledge the skill or talent of the player he was defeated by it. Murray, Djok, and Nadal always give due praise to those who beat them.

Delilah , 9/7/12 11:46 PM

@twinge, I was scrolling past but happen to see you mention my screen name.

FYI, I'm shaking in my shoes, NOT!!! I'm not afraid of YOU. And, I couldn't care less what you think of me. I think of you as a big, loud-mouthed bully with a dirty tongue, who reeks of alcohol, and thinks he can beat up on others using filth as his weapons. You think that your assinine comments wherin you like to belittle others are impressive? Newsflash, they're dumb, and you announce to the internet world that you're a filthy mess. Not to mention your survival on this site is dependent on pleasing the gang, using 3 different nicks, one of which has been dropped, coz the heavy lifting was too much for you to handle. LOL.

That's all I have to say to you. You can reply, but I won't be reading your drivel, nor will I feed your habit, same as I refuse to feed the sainted one's habit of following me around and ankle-biting on my every word to make herself popular as a troll. Have a nice inebriated evening. End of.

I'm not greatest player - Roger Federer

"I don't feel better than anyone, because we need past champions to pave the way for our generation and we have become very professional," he said.

"They have led the way and inspired myself and other players to chase the big records out there.

"Back in the day they weren't doing that, they were just playing to play tennis. Things have changed dramatically with the press reminding us 'you should do this and win that and you'll be considered the greatest of all time'.

"And anyway I don't think you can compare different eras in tennis."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/18764325

tennisnba , 9/8/12 4:07 PM

Q. Both McEnroe and Agassi said in the World Team Tennis match this July that tennis right now at the top, men?s tennis is the toughest ever. Do you think you four guys are the toughest maybe in history in terms of competing against each other and winning events?

ROGER FEDERER: I?d say no, but I don?t know. Just because you look back maybe 15 years, then you have Sampras, Edberg, Becker, and Agassi, I don?t know who else. Those guys weren?t good or what? Do you know what I mean?

You look back, further back, 20 years, and you have the Connors and the Lendls. Those weren?t good either? I mean, I don?t know. So for me I think that?s respectful.

It?s just different times and definitely more athletic, there?s no doubt about that. But then again we don?t play doubles. We don?t play mixed. Maybe we play less matches today because it?s more taxing, but we do play less best?of?five set tennis than they used to play. You can?t compare really.

but we have somewhat of a golden era right now. I feel that truly. It?s nice to see Andy making his move at the Olympics, nice to see Novak having an absolutely ridiculous year last year, and then Rafa and myself still being around. It?s definitely good times. Past that you still have great champions as well. It?s very interesting at the top right now, and the depth I think has never been greater than right now. There?s no doubt about that.

But then best ever? The four of us? That?s a really difficult call.

Nadal believes previous tennis eras cannot match the excitement generated by the current stars of the sport.

"Pete Sampras versus Goran Ivanisevic match, or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable, It's not really tennis, it is a few swings of the racquet.

It was less eye-catching than what we do now. Everyone enjoys the tennis we play much more. I am not saying we are playing better tennis, just more enjoyable tennis. For me, in the past it was just serve, serve, serve."
