Janko Tipsarevic makes a return trip to the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows as he takes out Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets on Wednesday. Tipsarevic will go up against David Ferrer with the winner to be a part of Super Saturday.
Janko Tipsarevic took care of Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-2 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday afternoon. Tipsarevic held 14 of 15 service games and abused his opponent's second serve to reach the quarterfinals after two hours and 23 minutes.
This one had been suspended overnight due to rain with Tipsarevic leading 5-2 in the first set. After Kohlschreiber held to stay in the opener, the world No. 9 closed it out with a routine hold.
Decisive moments came during the second, especially after Tipsarevic failed to finish off the proceedings on serve at 5-4. Kohlschreiber was granted a new lease on life and seemed to be on the verge of capitalizing on it when he seized a mini-break for a 4-3 lead in the tiebreaker. Tipsarevic got it right back, however, and converted set point on Kohlschreiber's serve when the German struck an errant backhand.
From there it was all over Kohlschreiber, who was coming off consecutive five-set victories at the expense of Benoit Paire (in a final tiebreaker) and John Isner (ended at 2:26 a.m. on Monday morning). An early break allowed Tipsarevic to take complete control of the match and he capped off the win in style with another break at 5-2.
The eighth-seeded Serb fired nine aces while double-faulting twice and he won a whopping 62 percent of Kohlschreiber's second-serve points. Kohlschreiber recorded 12 aces and four doubles.
Tipsarevic will go up against No. 4 seed David Ferrer on Thursday. Ferrer rolled over Richard Gasquet during fourth-round action on Tuesday.
