  • Rafter upset with poor Tomic attitude

    9/5/12 7:09 PM | Johan Lindahl
Rafter upset with poor Tomic attitude Australian Davis Cup hero Patrick Rafter has given a big serve to his rising hope Bernard Tomic after the teenager put in a pathetic performance in losing to Andy Roddick in the second round of the Us Open.

Rafter, who will have to rely on Tomic and veteran campaigner Lleyton Hewitt in next week's Davis Cup relegation battle away against Germany, was unimpressed as Tomic dropped the last set against Roddick to love.

"I threw out the big D word to him yesterday - disgraceful," the two-time US Open champion Rafter told Australian television. "There is no use sugar-coating something. He has to do the work.

"We have two weeks of Davis Cup coming up and that is hard work and hard training. He has to pull his socks up and be part of this team."

Tomic has always been a problem child for national tennis authorities - and his exploits over recent years with traffic cops in his home state of Queensland have not done him any public relations favours either.

The youngest man in the ATP top 50 also had a past feud with Aussie icon Hewitt, 31, which has since been patched over. The May-December pairing are the best that the Aussie can put onto the court against Germany in hopes of returning to the World Group through a victory.
