  • Murray hungry for more than tennis

    9/4/12 3:45 AM | Johan Lindahl
Murray hungry for more than tennis Andy Murray can work up a righteous hunger after playing a tough match, And the Scot is anything but shy about packing away the recovery calories during his post-tennis feeding sessions.

After spending nearly four hours in beating Spaniard Feliciano Lopez to advance at the New York major, the world number four Scot was thinking of nothing but where his next meal was coming from.

The gluten-free player, who in the past was known for knocking back 30-40 sushi rolls, admits he needs plenty of healthy fuel to perform: "I eat a lot of protein, meat, fish. I have like protein shakes I take after the match. I try to get about 150 grams of protein in me, that helps repair the muscles. I need to eat a lot.

"You can lose two or three kilos so you have to drink properly. Obviously when you finish you're still burning calories. I just need to make sure I stay topped up on that. If you don't, you'll be tired going into the next match."

As he prepared to face the monster serve of Canadian Milos Raonic in the fourth round, Murray admitted that sushi would certainly be on the menu. "We actually had steak a couple nights ago, maybe tomorrow I'll do that. For for dinner I'll have fish one night, chicken the next, then steak.

"I try not to have the same thing every day."

Didn't know Murray follows a gluten free diet. Last I heard he tried it for a short while after Djokovic told him that he was following a gluten free diet because he was gluten intollerant, which was believed to be the reason for Djokovics' allergies and lack of energy at times. This was at the time when Djokovic was having that incredible run last year sometime. I clearly remember Murray stating that he tried it, but it wasn't working for him.

Bigl, I heard that as well and as there was a picture of Andy tucking into a massive piece of chocolate cake at the Toronto Masters a few weeks ago, I don't believe this is true.

smug Murray will be GS champion.

congrats.

tennisnba , 9/4/12 3:43 PM

tennismba, you have such great insights into the game of tennis. Very fair and objective overall. Best poster on here. Ricky and Cheryl should maybe move over and allow you to write your own blog on TT!!! That would be awesome, don't you think?

I see you've picked Murray to win the USO. I'm interested in how you think he will be able to beat Fed and Djokovic in succession since he has never been able to achieve this.

agfmilos , 9/4/12 4:23 PM

I don't care. I think that anyone may win the victory.

I see an insult and arrogant nadal fan, whenever i comes here.

It is arrogant gamesmanship Nadal's retirement which I wish most.

tennisnba , 9/4/12 4:53 PM

@agfmilos
Oops bit of a short memory there. Andy did just that last month.

deuce , 9/4/12 5:05 PM

tennisnba, yes but you clearly said that Murray will be GS champion (and I assume you are referring to the USO).

Why do you believe with all of your tennis knowledge that he will beat Federer at the USO for instance when he has never done this before? Why now? Is Federer now too old do you believe?

agfmilos , 9/4/12 5:11 PM

^^Oh dear taking tennisba seriously and forgetting what just happened a month ago.
Still sore over yesterdays pasting perhaps agfMILOS?
lol, too bad too bad.

Twinge , 9/4/12 5:20 PM

But Twinge, surely tennisnba must have insights we are missing? tennisnba is an obvious tennis guru.

Of course I take him seriously. Why, don't you? Is it just the Olympics he is basing this on or is there something more tangible?

Still waiting on his answer. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

agfmilos , 9/4/12 5:24 PM

whisper ... I don't think somebody's not very clever on this thread, but I won't say who it is ;)

Clue: the person is factually misled, ignores correction, sarcastic without humour, possibly angry and definitely rude. But, on the upside, does appear to have the positive trait of loyalty, so not all bad.

alex , 9/4/12 5:29 PM

"I don't think" should read "I think"

alex , 9/4/12 5:31 PM

When Rafa is injured, tennis is injured. The apathy for the USO is palpable. People are just going through the motions because the main man is off injured.

nadline , 9/4/12 5:31 PM

nadline - really feel for rafa just now. Just hoping he'll be back for O2 finals. It's amazing to think but, as he rightly points out, he still has lots of years ahead of him - still only 26 - so he has to think of long term. The other top guys won't want him out so long that his ranking starts to drop - otherwise he could show up like a shark in the reefs of the early rounds in oz - ouch :-(
GET WELL SOON RAFA !!!

"When Rafa is injured, tennis is injured. The apathy for the USO is palpable. People are just going through the motions because the main man is off injured..."

Stop going on like this please, its getting tiresome.

Twinge , 9/4/12 6:06 PM

@nadline 5.31
Come off it nadline, it's probably true for Rafa fans, and I'm really sorry about Rafa, but it certainly isn't for the rest of us. I'm not "going through the motions" at all. I'm excited.
Expect Nole, Fed, Delpotro, Ferrer, Cilic etc fans are too.

deuce , 9/4/12 6:17 PM

Yes, a bit of overplay there, but understandable for rafa fans.

The irony is that, if anything, rafa missing should make the slams harder, not easier, for the finalist from the other half of the draw - i.e. should it go to seeding, federer will now have to play a nole who hasn't been softened up by rafa first.

alex , 9/4/12 6:21 PM

I am hoping for a Federer/Djokovic final

pennster , 9/5/12 12:21 AM

nadline, YOUR apathy for the USO is probably laughable, you DO NOT speak for all of us. Though I wonder even about that as you're still constantly on here Nadalmmenting anywhere and everywhere. Not only was that comment out of nowhere and completely off topic, it's also a big middle-finger to all the other players and their fans. It even bothers me I'm taking time to respond to it, this has been the most exciting USO for me in 9 years (my guy's playing as he has nothing left to lose). Get a life for crying out loud!

ts38 , 9/5/12 8:07 AM

.....said the pot, calling the kettle black.

rafaisthebest , 9/5/12 9:04 AM

I believe Murray has claimed that he is trying to go gluten free, but whether he sticks to it or not is another matter altogether.

cherylmurray , 9/5/12 1:20 PM

Whatever you've been eating this summer, muzz, stay on it.

alex , 9/5/12 5:08 PM

I still can' stop smiling over Murray winning gold, especially considering whose ass he clinically whipped in the process.

Good luck Champ!
