Murray downs Raonic, Cilic next World No. 4 Andy Murray kept his US Open run alive, ousting Canada's Milos Raonic to reach the quarterfinals. The third seed is through to face 12th seed Marin Cilic for a place in the semifinals.

Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray advanced to the final eight at the US Open following his straight-set upending of 15th seed Milos Raonic. The 25-year-old converted four of 12 break points en route to a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory in 120 minutes.

Murray broke to 5-4 in the opening set, aided by a well-timed drop-shot. Triple set-point came in short order for the Scot, who closed once Raonic missed a service return.

After he missed two break chances at 2-2 in the second, a forehand error from the 15th seed gave Murray a 3-2 edge. The third seed held double set point at 5-3, but was unable to convert. Set point number three arrived at 5-4, with Murray striking an ace to seal the two-sets-to-love lead.

Murray continued his effort to break at 1-1 and 4-2 in set three. The No. 3 seed completed the round of 16 with 8 aces and 31 winners.

He will take on world No. 13 Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals. Cilic defeated Slovakia's Martin Klizan in the round of 16.

Looks as if Andy raised his game when he needed to. Still loving Kelli writing "Olympic gold medalist" lol. Perhaps Lendl whispers it in Andy's ear at the start of his matches to give him some inspiration....;)
Come on!

Deuce: See you got up early to see the result. I slept through my alarm, again, so didn't see any of the match and hardly dared to open up the computer to find out what happened.

Straight sets no less! Hope French Eurosport show a replay later this morning.

I knew Murray would win.

Milos is going to go down the same route as Karlovic if he continues ro rely on his serve, saying "if I serve well, that's sort of what sort of happens. It's a ripple effect". He has very little game apart from his serve which may win him matches on occcasions, but not many. He's too complacent about the rest of his game.

nadline , 9/4/12 8:14 AM

I agree 100% nadline, i fear Milos is not going to live up to the hype.

I think Raonic can work his way to the top ten, but I'm not sure when. He may win a slam or two, but that's most probably when the top four are at the tail end of their career. IOW, he'll outlast them and he'll have better chances of winning slams against the likes of Tomic, Harrison, Dimitrov.
