Twelfth seed Marin Cilic advanced to his second US Open quarterfinal after upending Slovakia's Martin Klizan in straight sets. The Croatian moves on to face either world No. 4 Andy Murray or world No. 16 Milos Raonic in the next round.
World No. 13 Marin Cilic is through to the final eight, having ousted World No. 52 Martin Klizan in straight sets. The 23-year-old converted seven of 10 break points en route to a 7-5, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
After winning the 43-minute opening set, Cilic twice rallied from a break deficit in the second. Two set points came at 5-4 for the 12th seed, who took a two-sets-to-love edge as Klizan committed a volley error. Cilic continued the effort to break three times in the final set.
"I’m very, very happy and thrilled to be back in the quarters," said Cilic. "The last two seasons since playing the semis at the Australian Open, I've been having lack of results at the Grand Slams. This just shows I had a really good summer, (playing) consistently.
"I think what helped me the most was playing a lot of matches. I won two titles. Just kept me pushing, going and going after that kind of a game. But I was even working in the beginning of the season. Now just happy that I'm in the quarters."
Cilic ended the round of 16 match with seven aces and 23 winners.
He is scheduled to meet third seed Andy Murray or 15th seed Milos Raonic for a place in the semifinals.
