American Mardy Fish became the latest in a string of two-sets down comebacks at this year's edition of the US Open, scoring a five-set win over Nikolay Davydenko.
The situation looked dire for American Mardy Fish by the end of the second set of his match against Russia's Nikolay Davydenko. The world No. 25 was down two sets before storming back to win 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.
Fish started the match flat and allowed Davydenko to dictate play from the baseline. The Russian, who made a fine ATP career on his consistent groundstrokes, showed why he was once world No. 3.
He was soundly out-playing Fish for two sets, just nipping the American in the second-set tiebreaker. But he could not keep his level of play up after that. The Russian, who is ranked 47th in the world, fell apart in the third set. Errors took over Davydenko's game, allowing Fish to get a foothold in the match. Fish was able to run through the last three sets with ease.
