    Tsonga through, Raonic survives World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is through to the second round after taking out Slovakia’s Karol Beck in straight sets. The Frenchman is joined in round two by fellow seed Milos Raonic, who outlasted Santiago Giraldo in five sets.

    Fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made a successful start to the US Open, upending veteran Karol Beck in straight sets. The 27-year-old tallied 13 aces and 41 winners en route to a 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(2) victory in two hours and eight minutes. Tsonga ended the first-round match with five of 12 break points converted.

    He will take on Martin Klizan in the second round.

    (15) Milos Raonic def. Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

    Fifteenth seed Milos Raonic survived an extended opening-round match with Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo Tuesday afternoon. The 21-year-old rallied from two-sets-to-one down before holding match point in the final set. Raonic closed as Giraldo struck a forehand long serving at 4-5. The Canadian completed the effort with 30 aces.

    He is slated to meet veteran Paul-Henri Mathieu for a place in the third round.
