Andy Roddick and Alexandr Dolgopolov will take the court as day two of the first round gets underway in Flushing Meadows.
Andy Roddick vs. Rhyne williams
American veteran Andy Roddick had a great start to the hard court season this summer with a win in Atlanta. But his results have been patchy since then, with a first round ouster in Cincinnati and a loss in the third round of Winston-Salem last week at the hands of Belgian Steve Darcis. Still, Roddick has traditionally played well at the US Open, most often with the New York crowds firmly in his corner.
His opponent is the 21-year-old American Rhyne williams, who was forced to come up through qualifying to win himself a spot in the main draw. williams is ranked 289th in the world, a ranking low enough that he is sometimes forced to qualify for Challenger events.
williams will have the benefit of having matches under his belt already, but Roddick is vastly more experienced and should be able to use his huge first serve to intimidate williams.
Prediction - Roddick in straight sets.
Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Jesse Levine
The Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov will take on American lefty Jesse Levine in his first match of the 2012 US Open. Dolgopolov is ranked No. 15 in the world with varying degrees of success on North American hard courts this summer. The Ukrainian won the event in Washington but got knocked out of both Toronto and Cincinnati in the first round.
He made the trip to Winston-Salem last week and came away with a quarterfinal showing.
Prediction - Dolgopolov sometimes struggles with consistency, but he has far more fire power than Levine and should be able to use his serve to bully Levine around a bit. The Ukrainian in 4.
