• Fish, Verdasco advance in New York

Fish, Verdasco advance in New York Mardy Fish and Fernando Verdasco had successful opening matches as the 2012 US Open got under way at Flushing Meadows.

Mardy Fish def. Go Soeda 7-6(3), 7-6(2), 6-3

This was not the smoothest match for American Mardy Fish. The world No. 25 was up a break in both the first and second set over Japanese opponent Go Soeda and failed to do so in each case. Soeda managed to secure two of his three service breaks as Fish was ready to pocket leads in each of the first two frames. Fortunately for the Fish camp, the American held it together well enough in the tiebreaker that he won in straight sets anyway, but it was a bit of a rusty start.

Fernando Verdasco def. Rui Machado 6-1, 6-2, 6-4

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco had a routine start to his US Open campaign. The No. 25 seed faced a rusty opponent in Portugal's Rui Machado. The world No. 131 hit just 10 winners in the entire match, including two aces. Verdasco was able to control most of the baseline play and he benefited from poor serving from the Portuguese man. Machado donated seven double-faults to the Verdasco cause.

Verdasco won 88 points to Machado's 57 and the two men spent just an hour and 40 minutes on court, good news for Verdasco for the second round.
