Federer eases past Young at US Open Top seed Roger Federer defeated American Donald Young to hand the American his 17th first-round loss in his last 18 tournaments played.

Switzerland's Roger Federer wasted no time getting started with his campaign for a second straight major, posting a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win. The Swiss, who comes into the US Open off a title at the Cincinnati Masters, won his 17th Grand Slam at Wimbledon this year and looks to cement his No. 1 status with an 18th slam crown in New York.

Federer's opponent on Monday was the struggling Donald Young, who has had a positively dismal year, going 3-22 on the season so far. The loss is perhaps of even more consequence for Young, as his current ranking of No. 81 is going to plummet after his loss to Federer. The American had fourth-round points to defend.

The match could have been worse for Young. The underdog managed to secure a break of the Federer serve, though it came in the second set, where Federer was able to secure three breaks.

Young made an attempt at the end of the match to get back on serve in the third set. He found his way to deuce on Federer's serve at 5-4, but the No. 1 seed was simply too good and Young sent a last ball wide on Federer's third match point.

Federer will take on Bjorn Phau in the second round.

Young was up and down in the match. He wastes too much energy looking at his Mom and new coach. He should go without a coach and family entourage for awhile so that he can make his own decisions on the court.
