  • Ferrer, Isner look to capitalize at U.S. Open

    8/27/12 3:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer, Isner look to capitalize at U.S. Open With Rafael Nadal out of the U.S. Open, world No. 5 David Ferrer is the highest seed in one of the draw's four quarters. Ferrer is joined in a deep, balanced section by Janko Tipsarevic, John Isner, Richard Gasquet, and Tommy Haas.

One thing's for sure at the 2012 U.S. Open: there will be a "surprise" semifinalist.

That's what happens when Rafael Nadal pulls out, David Ferrer jumps into a top seed in one of the four sections, and then Ferrer draws Janko Tipsarevic as his 5-8 seed.

Ferrer and Tipsarevic are no pushovers--not even close--but other contenders in the third quarter are chomping at the bit. They include John Isner, Richard Gasquet, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Tommy Haas, Mikhail Youzhny, and Viktor Troicki.

Isner is coming off another title in Winston-Salem, just as he was last year when he reached the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows. The 6'9'' American, who saved three championship points against Tomas Berdych on Saturday, opens with Xavier Malisse and may have to get past Tipsarevic in round four before a possible meeting with Ferrer.

Ferrer has no cakewalk to the quarterfinals. The Spaniard will kick off his campaign against big-serving South African Kevin Anderson before a potential third-round clash against either Youzhny or Lleyton Hewitt. Haas and Gasquet are on a collision course for the third round in Ferrer's half of the section.

In addition to Hewitt, Anderson, and Malisse, other unseeded threats include Brian Baker, Grigor Dimitrov, Benoit Paire, Ernests Gulbis, Jurgen Melzer, and Gilles Muller. Gulbis has to begin against Haas while Baker could test Tipsarevic in the second round.
