While he may be out of the US Open due to his continuing left knee injury, Rafael Nadal's people are already lining up their man for a profitable 2013.
The former No. 1 is set to headline a March exhibition at Madison Square Garden.
Nadal, who has not played for almost two months, has given no indication of when he might return to tennis, saying only that he dreams of playing for Spain in the Davis Cup semifinals next month at home.
While that wish may or may not come to pass, the 26-year-old is surely expected to have returned to the sport well before his exho date, where he is due to face Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine is another player who must deal with a delicate problems, with his wrists a constant concern.
Last week's Cincinnati semi-final victim to Roger Federer headed straight to his specialist after the event to have his left wrist checked out after it had been giving him pain. He missed almost a year on the ATP in 2010 due to right wrist surgery.
Also participating in the pay-to-play New York mix will be Serena Williams and WTA No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. The hit-and-giggle has become an unofficial cash-machine stopover for some of the fortunate tennis drawcards in recent years while traveling from February Middle East events to Indian Wells in California for that hard-court Masters 1000.

Rafa is the biggest draw in tennis. That's a well known fact.

Well, here is someone who agrees with nadline:

Choice quote:
"This year's U.S. Open tennis tournament is a party without the balloons. They are serving cake with no frosting.
Nadal is a swirling, grunting, lashing baseline strongman; Federer a smooth, cool, effortless puppeteer. Nadal says repeatedly that Federer is the greatest who ever played, and he both believes and means it. Often, after he says it, he goes out and beats him.
The U.S. Open will grind on to its conclusion. There will be drama and excitement. But there will be no Rafa, and that makes this Grand Slam a tad less grand."
Rafael Nadal is an ocean away, home on his beloved Spanish island of Mallorca. He is loving the time he has in the place where his mother says he "comes up for air" but certainly hating that he is not in Flushing Meadows, in the heat, noise and stress that only tennis in New York City can provide. There, he would be grinding match by match in the ugliest, toughest, most difficult tournament on the planet.

I just read the article myself and felt exactly the same...
I miss Rafa so much...I miss his style, his effort, his animal instinct, and most of all I miss his smile...Rafa will be back we all know it...But US Open is certainly not the same without Rafa...it does not have the excitement and the flavor that only Rafa can bring...
Our Rafa is training and getting ready...he will be back stronger than ever and eager for trophies...I can't wait to see him back on court again...
Vamos Rafa Dearest!

ritb,
Yes, thanks for the article. Great to read! :)
Nativenewyorker , 8/30/12 7:42 PM
You see, ritb, some people just don't like the truth. Everyone knows that Rafa is the one who puts the fizz in any tournament, without him it's like champagne gone flat. Even Murray said as much.
You know it, I know it and everyone else knows it, but some people just don't want to admit it.
I am going to stop fretting and hanging on every word from Rafa's team and every speculative article and just wait patiently for the Pied Piper of tennis to return.
nadline , 8/30/12 7:46 PM
How about this bit:
"Without Nadal, the U.S. Open has no foil for Roger Federer. It is Sampras without Agassi, Borg without McEnroe. Tennis fans long for the contrasts in style, which are fascinating and addictive. There will be competitive matches, such as Federer and Djokovic, or either against Andy Murray. But Nadal and Federer are the fire and ice."
And this:
"Much of the game around him, and across the net from him, is vanilla. Nadal's game is chocolate strawberry pistachio, an abundance of flavor that has become an acquired taste for tennis fans."
Rafa is the one who adds flavour to an otherwise bland tour. No other player's absence is as conspicuous as Rafa's.

You're so insecure about this opinion of yours, nadline, that you feel the need to keep asserting it multiple times at every opportunity. Maybe it's the hope that you might just convince yourself one day?

Please check your facts, Delpo did not lose to Fed at Cincy; he lost to Nole in the SF.
Yeah, playing at MSG is profitable, I see Fed, Roddick(?) played there in the past, so now it's Rafa's turn. He probably has to go to NY, having missed it this year, he has his sponsorship obligations to fulfil there, I think.
