  • Tsonga, Berdych lead field in Winston-Salem

    8/19/12 8:39 PM | Kelli DeMario
Tsonga, Berdych lead field in Winston-Salem World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga makes his return to competition as the ATP World Tour continues the North American hard-court season at the Winston-Salem Open. The Frenchman is set to enter the tournament as the top seed.

World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is back on court after losing an opening-round match to compatriot Jeremy Chardy at the Masters 1000 Canada. The 27-year-old has compiled a 37-15 season record, aided by championship winning run in Doha.

Tsonga will be making his Winston-Salem Open debut this week.

The top seed headlines a competitive half of the draw that hosts (3) John Isner, (6) Marcel Granollers, (8) Julien Benneteau, (10) Viktor Troicki, (12) Kevin Anderson, (13) Jurgen Melzer and (15) Pablo Andujar.

Other players in the section include: Carlos Berlocq, Go Soeda, Benoit Paire, Alejandro Falla, David Goffin, Nicolas Mahut and former World No. 5 Tommy Robredo.

After a first-round bye, Tsonga will begin his run against either Thomaz Bellucci or former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis.

World No. 7 Tomas Berdych tops the bottom half of the draw alongside (4) Alexandr Dolgopolov, (5) Andy Roddick, (7) Sam Querrey, (9) Feliciano Lopez, (11) Denis Istomin, (14) David Nalbandian and (16) Jarkko Nieminen.

Following an opening-round bye, the Czech is slated to start his campaign against Malek Jaziri or Alex Bogomolov Jr.

Why is tsonga playing Winston-Salem? Us open is next week surely he will be too tired for the US open if he makes a deep run here may be Tsonga doesnt believe in his chances at the US open

Wonder of wonders, donald Young won his first match in 18 attempts. Maybe there's hope for him after all.

Yikes, roddick and Blake duked it out in two tough tie-breaker sets. Andy's shoulder must be really shot coz his serve is not working at all. this is rough to play two close sets in a night match then maybe play the next day. I haven't seen the schedule for tomorrow and am surmishing that roddick will play tomorrow, or maybe NOT. sorry for bad typing but my my Ipad is the pits coz it jumbles up words and the caps key is kinda soft.
