Federer holds off Fish in Cincinnati quarters An entertaining night session on Friday in Cincinnati sees Roger Federer get past Mardy Fish in straight sets. Federer ensures an all-Swiss semifinal showdown against Stanislas Wawrinka.

Roger Federer and Mardy Fish did not disappoint in the 2010 Cincinnati title, nor did they in a highly-anticipated quarterfinal on Friday night.

Federer, who beat Fish 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-4 to win it all two years ago, scored a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory to reach the semis. The world No. 1 survived a thrilling second set to advance in one hour and 27 minutes.

Fish was slow to sink his teeth into the match, and it cost him the first set. The 30-year-old American dropped serve right away to fall behind 1-0 and he never came close to getting back on level terms. Federer closed out the opener at 5-3 with his second break, converting his second set point after four deuces with a blistering backhand winner.

A much more competitive second saw Fish raise his standard of play to new heights. The No. 10 seed and two-time finalist held serve the entire way, including at 4-5 when he saved a match point with a huge first serve. Two routine holds later a tiebreaker had to decide it.

Both men continued to play well and aggressively with the pressure on. Federer earned an initial mini-break at 3-2 by getting the upper hand in a long baseline exchange. The top-seeded Swiss consolidate his advantage en route to 6-3 before capitalizing on his second match point with an overhead smash.

"I'm playing really well this week and I'm extremely happy," said Federer. "It's nice to be back on this surface. Now I'm into the semis and it's a great result already, but I hope I can keep on going."

Next up for Federer is an all-Swiss showdown with Stanislas Wawrinka.
