  • Del Potro staves off Troicki for quarterfinal spot

    8/16/12 9:39 PM | Cheryl Murray
Del Potro staves off Troicki for quarterfinal spot Juan Martin Del Potro came back from a poor second set to dispatch Serbia's Viktor Troicki in their third-round match at the Cincinnati Masters.

Juan Martin Del Potro, who missed nearly the entire 2010 season with wrist surgery, had an early scare in his match against Viktor Troicki on Thursday but came back to win 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-1.

Del Potro started off strong, breaking Troicki at love, but he was broken right back. At 1-1, Del Potro called for the trainer to come for treatment on his left wrist and to take medication.

Troicki reeled off the next two service games, with Del Potro playing tentatively. But the Argentine had a resurgence at 2-3 and got the break back again on a Troicki error. The two men would trade breaks one more time before the deciding tiebreaker, which Del Potro won comfortably, holding Troicki to two points.

The second set was all Troicki. The Serb broke immediately, then rolled through the set to tie things up at 6-2.

Del Potro returned the favor in the third set. He broke Troicki's serve immediately, and again at 4-1, where Troicki helped things along by double-faulting on break point. The Argentine served it out at love to earn his spot in the quarterfinals, where he will take on upset king Jeremy Chardy.
