  • Haas Cincy run ends at the hands of Del Potro

    8/15/12 8:45 PM | Cheryl Murray
Haas Cincy run ends at the hands of Del Potro Juan Martin Del Potro did what countryman David Nalbandian couldn't -- he dispatched veteran Tommy Haas at the Cincinnati Masters.

The first set of this second-round match was a tightly-contested and entertaining affair. World No. 9 Juan Martin Del Potro drew first blood with a break of Tommy Haas's serve in the German's second service game of the match. Haas helped Del Potro along by double-faulting on break point.

Haas came storming back though, with the world No. 23 breaking right back after earning three break points.

The two men continued to play well through the first set, but at 5-5, with Haas serving to force a tiebreaker, the German missed four first serves and allowed Del Potro's return to penetrate. The Argentine broke to 15 and earned the chance to serve out the set. He did so with three aces and one service winner.

The second set started off well enough for Haas, with the German holding his first two service games, but Del Potro stormed through the rest of the set, winning five games in a row to send Haas off to New York early.

Del Potro will take on Viktor Troicki in the third round.
