  • Querrey comes back for the win, Roddick goes out

    8/14/12 11:13 PM | Cheryl Murray
Querrey comes back for the win, Roddick goes out American Sam Querrey came back from a set down to oust Austria's Jurgen Melzer, while injured countryman Andy Roddick bowed out to Jeremy Chardy.

Sam Querrey def. Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Sam Querrey continued to display his good summer form with a hard-fought, three-set match win over Jurgen Melzer. The American got off to a slow start, getting broken twice to give Melzer the lead.

Querrey came roaring back in the second set. He turned the tables on Melzer, breaking the Austrian twice and serving up five aces while facing no break points. However, most of the drama came in the third set, with Querrey jumping out to an early lead only to face break points at 4-3. The American came up with a stunning lunging backhand volley to save his service game and eventually the match.

Jeremy Chardy def. Andy Roddick 7-6(4), 6-3

After a decent start to the match, Andy Roddick found himself at a set disadvantage when Jeremy Chardy won the first-set in a tiebreaker.

The American called the trainer out in the second set, clearly hampered by a problem with his back. He decided to tough out to the end and afterwards said, "I felt fine early on, and then I had one lunge forehand and, you know, we have all had it. You know back kind of goes out or spasms a little bit. It progressively got worse."

Roddick is due to compete next at the US Open, which starts in less than two weeks.
