Tomic gets past Harrison in Cincinnati Bernard Tomic is the first opening-round winner in Cincinnati as he defeats Ryan Harrison in straight sets on Sunday. Tomic awaits either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Brian Baker.

Bernard Tomic beat Ryan Harrison 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday afternoon. Tomic fought off two set points in the second before advancing in one hour and 31 minutes.

A quick break in the opener was all Tomic needed because he completed dominated on serve in the early going. The 19-year-old Australian dropped a mere two points in his first five service games while befuddling Harrison with all kinds of offspeed slices.

Harrison squandered two break points at 3-2 in the second then seemed to be on the fast track to elimination when he was broken at 3-3. The 20-year-old American, however, stayed in it mentally and broke right back for 4-4. He even saw two chances to end the set on his opponent's serve, but Tomic played consistently and managed to force a tiebreaker.

The world No. 49 connected on three perfect passing shots en route to a commanding 4-1 lead in the decider. Harrison, though, got back it when Tomic double-faulted for 4-2 and the crowd favorite eventually won four points in a row to storm ahead 5-4. But Tomic was too solid in the end and a final mini-break came at 6-5 when Harrison netted a backhand.

"It was tight," Tomic assured. "There were lots of chances; it could have gone either way. I played well early in the tiebreaker and I think I deserved to win in the end."
