Baker avenges Wimbledon loss to Kohlschreiber Brian Baker takes out Philipp Kohlschreiber in two tiebreak sets on Monday in Cincinnati. Baker heads into a second-round clash against Bernard Tomic.

Brian Baker ended a five-match losing streak with a 7-6(7), 7-6(3) victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Monday afternoon. Baker was broken only once and he withstood 10 Kohlschreiber aces to advance after one hour and 46 minutes of play.

Kohlschreiber had ended Baker's Wimbledon run in the fourth round earlier this summer, and for a moment it looked like the German would have the upper hand once again. Both players cruised en route to 5-5 in the opener before Kohlschreiber seized the first break of the day. Out of almost nowhere, though, Cincinnati's No.15 seed turned in a sloppy service game and Baker broke back to force a tiebreaker.

Baker squandered set points at 6-4, 6-5 (on his own serve) and 7-6 in the 'breaker. Nonetheless, the 78th-ranked American righted the ship for a crucial mini-break at 7-7 and closed it out one point later.

A tiebreaker also had to decide the second, as both men held serve the entire way without facing a break point. Baker delivered a flurry of lobs and passing shots and had control the entire way despite giving back an early mini-break. Kohlschreiber sailed a return long at 6-3 to end the proceedings.

"He won all the big points at Wimbledon," said Baker, who stuck six aces on his way to a second-round meeting with Bernard Tomic . "This time I won all the huge points, so it was nice to return the favor."
