Tsonga fire hydrant collision to keep him from Cincy A freak, painful encounter with a fire hydrant has ruled Olympic doubles medalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out of the Cincinnati Masters next week.

But the Frenchman's team says he should be ready for the US Open, which starts in just over a fortnight.

Tsonga, who was beaten by countryman Jeremy Chardy in an opening match in Toronto only a day after arriving from the Olympic men's doubles final, was reported to have collided with a fire hydrant on the streets of Toronto.

The injury required stitches on his injured right knee and will means he must rest for more than a week.

"Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has had to pull out of the Cincinnati tournament because of an unfortunate accident on Thursday in the streets of Toronto," his agent said in a statement.

"Jo had to have eight stitches in his right knee and has been told to rest for ten days. His participation in the US Open (starting on August 27) is not in doubt."

The world No. 6 lost alongside countryman Michael Llodra to the Bryan Brothers in the London Games final last weekend.
