Janko Tipsarevic takes care of Marin Cilic in straight sets on Friday in Toronto. Tipsarevic is finally through to the quarterfinals of the rain-delayed event.
After a day off because of rain, Janko Tipsarevic beat Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of the Rogers Cup on Thursday afternoon. Tipsarevic needed just one hour and 14 minutes to book a quarterfinal meeting with either Marcel Granollers or Jeremy Chardy.
A dominant opening set saw Tipsarevic win 12 of 14 first-serve points while saving the only break point he faced. As a result, two breaks of his own were more than enough for the ninth-ranked Serb to cruise.
Cilic saw three break chances early in the second, but it proved to be his last gasp when he could not convert. Tipsarevic promptly broke at love for a 3-2 lead and never looked back. Cilic survived a tough service game at 3-5 to stay alive, but Tipsarevic closed out the proceedings with a love hold one game later.
The 15th-ranked Croat wrapped up his effort with four aces and one double-fault. Tipsarevic, meanwhile, is slated to contest his quarterfinal later on Friday due to the backed-up schedule.
