Janko Tipsarevic holds off Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets on Wednesday in Toronto. Tipsarevic is through to a third-round clash against Marin Cilic.
Janko Tipsarevic defeated Mikhail Youzhny 7-6(2), 6-4 in the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday afternoon. Tipsarevic converted three of five break chance to advance in one hour and 43 minutes.
A tight first set saw Youzhny recover from a break deficit and force a tiebreaker. The 30th-ranked Russian, however, donated a mini-break right at the start and could not recover. A Youzhny double-fault at 2-6 ended the set.
Both players dominated on serve in the second until suddenly their serves completely disappeared. Tipsarevic broke at 4-3 but failed to close out the match one game later. Still, the pressure was back on Youzhny at 4-5 and he could not hold to stay in it. The fifth-seeded Serb converted his first match point at 30-40 when Youzhny netted a backhand.
Tipsarevic struck five aces to book his spot alongside Marin Cilic in the third round. Cilic ousted Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 6-3.
