Jeremy Chardy takes out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets on Wednesday in Toronto. Chardy is joined in the third round by Marin Cilic, who defeated Marcos Baghdatis.
Jeremy Chardy d. (3) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-6(4)
The carnage continued at the Rogers Cup on Wednesday afternoon, with Tsonga joining Juan Martin Del Potro in the exodus from an already-depleted Toronto field. Tsonga, a quarterfinalist at the Olympics, fell to Chardy in one hour and 28 minutes without winning a set. The third-seeded Frenchman dropped serve to open the match and that was the lone difference in the first set.
Both players held throughout the second set, with Chardy saving three break points--including two set points--along the way. Tsonga double-faulted on the opening point of the tiebreaker and that all but finished him. Chardy held his serve the entire way and capitalized on his first match point at 6-4. Next up for the 47th-ranked Frenchman is Marcel Granollers.
(10) Marin Cilic d. Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 6-3
Cilic withstood 10 Baghdatis aces and broke four times to book a spot in the third round of the Rogers Cup after one hour and 21 minutes of play on Wednesday afternoon. After exchanging a pair of breaks in the first set, Baghdatis found himself serving to stay in it at 5-6. The 45th-ranked Cypriot cracked with the pressure on and got broken at love.
With momentum in hand, Cilic broke early in the second and raced to a 3-0 lead. The 10th-seeded Croat gave it back at 4-2 but recovered right away to break again for 5-3. Cilic endured another tough service game with the match on his racket, but he managed to close it out. Next up for the world No. 15 is Janko Tipsarevic, who beat Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets.
