Mikhail Youzhny dismisses Kevin Anderson in straight sets on Tuesday in Toronto. Youzhny will go up against Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.
Mikhail Youzhny defeated Kevin Anderson 6-1, 7-6(3) in the first round of the Rogers Cup on Tuesday afternoon. Youzhny needed one hour and 30 minutes to set up a meeting with familiar foe Janko Tipsarevic
A somewhat bizarre first set saw Anderson break in the opening game of the match for a 1-0 lead. Despite having one of the bigger serves on tour, however, the 6'7'' South African did not hold a single time in the opener. In fact, he lost six games in a row while watching Youzhny sprint past him in Usain Bolt-like fashion.
Youzhny ended up on a streak of nine games out of 10 en route to a 3-1 advantage in the second. Out of almost nowhere, though, the Russian gave it back at 4-3. Four holds later a tiebreaker had to decide the set.
It was never particularly close, as Youzhny won the first four points of the 'breaker all with winners. Anderson got one of the mini-breaks back with a winner off the net cord for 2-4, but Youzhny quickly closed out the proceedings.
The world No. 30 leads Tipsarevic 3-2 in their head-to-head series. They recently faced each other in the Wimbledon third round, with Youzhny prevailing 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
