American Sam Querrey made a strong start at the Masters 1000 Canada, taking out former world No. 8 Jurgen Melzer in straight sets. He is joined in round two by Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin, who took out wildcard Frank Dancevic.

World No. 35 Sam Querrey advanced to the second round by virtue of his straight-set ousting of Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer. The 24-year-old American tallied 11 aces and a trio of service breaks en route to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 59 minutes. Querrey held Melzer to just nine points on the return.
He will take on 13th seed Kei Nishikori for a place in the round of 16.
Mikhail Kukushkin def. (WC) Frank Dancevic 6-3, 7-5
World No. 69 Mikhail Kukushkin won his first tour-level match since the French Open, upending Canadian wildcard Frank Dancevic early Tuesday. The 24-year-old held 11 of 11 service games without facing a break point. Kukushkin completed the 86-minute effort with 30 of 34 first-service points captured.
He is slated to meet 14th seed Richard Gasquet in the second round.
