Dolgopolov, Fish advance to Citi Open semis Alexandr Dolgopolov defeats James Blake on Friday in Washington, D.C. Dolgopolov is joined in the semifinals by Mardy Fish, who cruised past Xavier Malisse.

    (2) Alexandr Dolgopolov d. James Blake 7-6(3), 6-4

Dolgopolov turned in a stellar baseline performance to beat Blake in one hour and 22 minutes during quarterfinal action at the Citi Open on Friday night. Blake got off to a strong start with a break lead in the first set and a chance for a double-break, but he could not pull away. Dolgopolov eventually managed to force a tiebreaker, which he dominated seven points to three.

With momentum in hand, Washington, D.C.'s No. 2 seed extended his advantage and soon found himself serving for the match at 5-3 in the second. Blake broke to stay live, but he promptly donated serve one game later and ended the match with a double-fault. Dolgopolov fired seven aces and earned four breaks as he set up a showdown against Los Angeles champion Sam Querrey.

    (1) Mardy Fish d. Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-4

Fish's 2012 U.S. Open campaign got off to a rough start in Atlanta with a sprained right ankle, but he has been in cruise-control mode this week. The top seed dropped his opening set to Bjorn Phau, but he roared to victory in that match and has not looked back. Fish needed only one hour and 20 minutes to see off Malisse on Friday afternoon.

The veteran American broke serve once in each set and once was enough even though he put in a horrendous 42 percent of his first deliveries. Fish saved both of the break points he faced along the way and converted his only two chances. He will battle 34-year-old German Tommy Haas for a place in the final.
