  • Federer takes on American hopeful Isner

    8/2/12 3:07 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer takes on American hopeful Isner Swiss representative Roger Federer will take on America's last hope, John Isner, for a chance to move into the semifinals.

The 2012 Wimbledon champion will be heavily favored in this quarterfinal match. Roger Federer's big win at the All-England Club boosted him back to the No. 1 position after years of chasing Pete Sampras’s all time record of 286 weeks at No. 1.

But despite being the heavy favorite, Federer has had a loss to American John Isner already this year, a shocker loss at a home Davis Cup match.

Isner has a grass-court title this year, winning Newport for the second year in a row, but his Wimbledon showing was dismal. The towering American lost in the first round at the hands of Colombian clay-courter Alejandro Falla.

Despite mediocre results, Isner has earned himself a part of Wimbledon history as well. The American was part of the longest match of all time, with his 70-68 5th set win over France's Nicolas Mahut back in 2010.

Federer's game is superior to Isner's in nearly every aspect except for Isner's first serve. But that particular weapon is so effective that it makes Isner a danger no matter who he's playing.

    Prediction – Federer in 3.

Falla is HORRENDOUS on clay

RickyDimon , 8/2/12 5:12 AM

fedex in 2 sets..may be 1 tie break and 1 like 6-3.

chenna21 , 8/2/12 5:59 AM

6-4 7-6 for Roger. But again, he didn't play well at all. He showed some huge nerves out there. It's hard to believe after all these years he is still unable to handle the pressure that swiss shirt puts on him.

Congrats FED! FEDfans! Allez Roger! Aller! C'MON FED! C'MON!

sky , 8/2/12 6:37 PM

Agree with Emil. Incredibly nervy from Fed. He should be able to beat del Potro on grass and maybe he can relax a bit more in the final where there is a best of 5 format so more margin of error.

chr18 , 8/2/12 6:44 PM

Even if hes nervy and not playing that well, as long as he is winning and getting the job done..thats all that matters

sanju , 8/2/12 7:30 PM

Delpo he will easily beat, if its Murray in the final, he will beat too..but if its Djoko in final..its anybodys game..his nerves may get the better of him if match with Djoko gets tense

sanju , 8/2/12 7:34 PM

typical

RickyDimon , 8/2/12 7:42 PM

Playing like this and with such nerves, I don't see Federer anywhere near of beating Djokovic or Murray.

Emiliano55 , 8/2/12 8:16 PM

Federer playing very well... good enough to win.on sunday u may see completely different federer.

chenna21 , 8/2/12 8:22 PM

Oh god Emi..I see your strategy of continuously saying Fed will not beat X or Y is working well, looks like you superstitious..you say it to ensure Fed wins :-)

sanju , 8/2/12 9:06 PM

C'mon sanju, I'm not 15. I don't play that "jinx" game you guys use to play due to being super and blind Federer-Nadal fans. I only say what I think it is going to happen.

I said it many times, from nowadays tennis I like Federer, Murray, Hewitt, Haas... but I'm not "fan" of any player.

Emiliano55 , 8/2/12 10:17 PM

Yeah, but Fed usually manages to lift his game when it really matters.

deuce , 8/2/12 10:30 PM

The match doesn't depend on Fed alone; Nole or Murray has something to say about the match result too. As long as Nole or Murray serves well, they have every chance of beating Fed. Those big hitters whom Fed met along the way, they just couldn't move as well as Nole/Murray. - different calibre. And that's why the top four guys made it to the semifinals yet again. I think Fed will get to the final, not sure about Nole and Murray. All three are serious about getting the gold this time, as they know they may not have another chance four years down the road.

Yeah, but Fed usually manages to lift his game when it really matters.
