    8/1/12 6:33 AM | Ricky Dimon
Fish, Haas advance at Citi Open Mardy Fish overcomes Bjorn Phau in three sets on Tuesday in Washington. Fish is joined in the second round by Tommy Haas, who ousted fellow 34-year-old Michael Russell.

    (1) Mardy Fish d. Bjorn Phau 4-6, 6-1, 6-2

Playing his first match since sustaining a fluke ankle injury in Atlanta, Fish got past Phau in one hour and 52 minutes during first-round action at the Citi Open on Tuesday night. Fish started slow, but the opening set went to Phau mainly because the underdog German could do no wrong. Phau closed it out with a routine hold at 5-4.

But it was all Fish the rest of the way. Washington's No. 1 seed held serve throughout the second and third sets, saving a total of four break points in that span. He wrapped up his effort with 15 aces and three double-faults as he booked a second-round meeting with either Nicolas Mahut or Los Angeles runner-up Ricardas Berankis.

    (4) Tommy Haas d. (Q) Michael Russell 6-4, 6-2

Haas did not face a single break point as his quest for U.S. Open seeding continued without any trouble on Tuesday evening. The 34-year-old German surrendered a mere nine points to Russell in nine service games and he won 85 percent of his first-serve points.

Russell, also 34, recorded the same number of aces and double-faults as his opponent (five and three), but he simply could not take care of his second serve. Haas abused it to the tune of three total breaks; one in the first set and two more in the second. The world No. 36 will battle Leonardo Mayer for a place in the quarterfinals.
