Almagro earns quarterfinal spot with win over Darcis Spaniard Nicolas Almagro booked a quarterfinal spot with his early-day straight-set victory over Belgian Steve Darcis.

Steve Darcis had one of the best wins of his career in the first round of the tournament, as he took advantage of the grass court woes of No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych. The Belgian took the confidence of the upset into his second round match against Santiago Giraldo, a Colombian clay-courter.

But he didn't have enough to navigate his way past the rock-solid Nicolas Almagro. The Spaniard won their third-round showdown 7-5, 6-3.

Almagro served well to defeat Darcis. The No. 11 seed smacked 14 aces for the match, five more than the normally harder hitting Belgian.

Almagro also took more chances on his groundstrokes, racking up more ticks in the winners and unforced error columns than his opponent.

The Spaniard was broken once in the first set, but managed to secure a second break of serve at the tail-end of the set to take the one-set advantage. From that point on, Almagro had control of the match.
