  • Gasquet, Baghdatis advance at Olympics

    7/31/12 1:25 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gasquet, Baghdatis advance at Olympics Richard Gasquet and Marcos Baghdatis made successful starts to their Olympic bids with wins as the first round wrapped up at the All-England Club.

Richard Gasquet (16) def. Robin Haase 6-3, 6-3

France's Richard Gasquet had no trouble with big-serving Dutchman Robin Haase, with the No. 16 seed moving easily into the second round. Rain wreaked havoc on the London Games on Sunday, forcing many of the scheduled matches including Gasquet-Haase to be rescheduled for Monday.

Haase is a tricky opponent on grass, as his booming first serve works well on the slick, low-bouncing surface. But it was not to be today for the Dutchman. Gasquet actually hit more aces on the day than Haase did, a death-blow for the world No. 33, who lives and dies by his first serve.

Gasquet will take on Marcos Baghdatis on Tuesday.

Marcos Baghdatis def. Go Soeda 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 6-2

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis won a tight match against Japan's Go Soeda to advance to the second round. Their match was among the many rained out in Sunday’s bad weather, with the men returning to finish on Monday.

Baghdatis clawed his way through this match. Soeda, who won the first set in the tiebreaker, was a pair of points from doing the same thing in the second set, which would have knocked Baghdatis out of the tournament. The Cypriot was able to hold on and eventually leveled the match at a set apiece.

Baghdatis got an early break in the third set and carried the momentum through to close out the decider easily.
