• Murray tries for Olympic gold on home soil

    7/28/12 3:46 AM | Cheryl Murray
Murray tries for Olympic gold on home soil Andy Murray will compete for an Olympic gold medal in front of the hometown London crowd.

Great Britain's best tennis hope is Scotland's Andy Murray. The world No. 4 just made his first-ever Wimbledon final a few weeks ago, when he lost to Roger Federer.

Murray got a difficult first-round opponent in Swiss Olympic doubles gold medalist Stanislas Wawrinka. If the Scot gets through Wawrinka, he'll have to look forward to Richard Gasquet in the round of 16.

In the other half of his section sits Tomas Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon finalist. Berdych had a shocker of a first-round exit this year at the All-England Club at the hands of Ernests Gulbis, but he remains a serious threat to a Murray medal.

Berdych shares his section with No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro and lurkers Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who is a good grass-court player, and young American Ryan Harrison.

Murray will be favored to get through to the quarterfinals, but memories of his disappointing loss on Centre Court might prove a difficult hurdle to get past.
