  • Djokovic goes for gold at London Olympics

    7/28/12 12:24 AM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic goes for gold at London Olympics Novak Djokovic hopes to add to his Olympic medal count (bronze in Beijing) as he takes the court in London over the next week. Djokovic is in a bottom section of the draw that also includes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Andy Roddick, and Milos Raonic.

Novak Djokovic finds himself in an unfamiliar position at the 2012 London Olympics--he is the No. 2 seed in the men's singles bracket. That is the case for Djokovic because Roger Federer surpassed him at the top spot in the rankings by capturing his seventh Wimbledon title.

The reward for Federer was a favorable Olympic draw, but Djokovic may have a tougher time in his quest to reach the final. The Serb, who took home the bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, opens with Fabio Fognini before likely running into an in-form Andy Roddick. Previously playing dismal tennis, Roddick has won two of his last three tournaments (Eastbourne on grass and Atlanta to kick off the U.S. Open Series).

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the other Top 8 seed in the bottom quarter, is also on course for a huge second-round showdown. The Frenchman begins against Thomaz Bellucci then will likely clash with big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic.

This section also boasts newly-minted Top 10 player and Hamburg champion Juan Monaco, 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt, Queen's Club and Umag winner Marin Cilic, and rising Belgian star David Goffin (French Open fourth round). Monaco and Goffin will face each other in a tough first-rounder while Cilic and Hewitt could do battle in the second round.
