  • Del Potro, Dimitrov advance in London

    7/28/12 9:53 PM | Cheryl Murray
Del Potro, Dimitrov advance in London Juan Martin Del Potro and in-form Bulgarian youngster Grigor Dimitrov moved safely into the second round at the All-England Club.

Juan Martin Del Potro (8) def. Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-1

It was an easy start to the Olympic games for Juan Martin Del Potro. The 2009 US Open champion upended Ivan Dodig in comfortable straight sets. The Argentine came out conservatively in the opening set. He kept his winner and unforced error counts low, cashing in on a few shaky points from Dodig and slightly more risky play from the Croat to secure the one break of the set.

The second set was dominant from Del Potro, but Dodig gave his opponent a leg up, playing dismal tennis on the big points. The No. 8 seed secured three service breaks to take the match.

Grigor Dimitrov def. Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 7-6(4)

This was a good win for Bulgarian youngster Grigor Dimitrov, who comes into the Olympics off the best run of his professional career so far. The world No. 53 has three semifinal results in four tournaments, one of which came on the grass courts of Queen’s Club.

Dimitrov had a routine opening set, breaking Poland's Lukasz Kubot's serve early to take the lead. Kubot wasn't able to earn enough chances on the Dimitrov serve to get the break back again and went down a set.

The second set was far more competitive, with Kubot actually earning the break of serve first before Dimitrov broke back to force the tiebreaker. The Bulgarian was better in the 'breaker, but the set wound to a close with an even 41 points won by both players.
