  • Kohlschreiber overcomes Volandri in Kitzbuhel semis

    7/27/12 5:22 PM | Ricky Dimon
Kohlschreiber overcomes Volandri in Kitzbuhel semis Philipp Kohlschreiber is through to the Kitzbuhel title match after beating Filippo Volandri in three sets on Friday. Kohlschreiber, who will also play the Olympics, awaits either Robin Haase or Martin Klizan.

Philipp Kohlschreiber will have zero days' rest prior to his first-round match at the London Olympics. That much was assured when Kohlschreiber beat Filippo Volandri 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals of the bet-at-home Cup on Friday afternoon.

The German got off to a strong start and raced to a 5-2 lead in the opening set. At 5-3, however, he cracked out of nowhere and failed to serve things out. Volandri eventually managed to force a tiebreaker, never allowed his opponent a set point, and finally stole it eight points to six.

It would have been no surprise if Kohlschreiber had one foot on the plane to London after throwing away the opener, but instead he battled back like a man on a mission in Kitzbuhel. The world No. 23 broke immediately and never came close to giving it back (three points lost in four service games), but he added one more for good measure.

An early break in the third all but ended the proceedings for Volandri. The 99th-ranked Italian saved none of the two break points he faced in the decider and failed to capitalize on his only chance. Kohlschreiber served out the match at love in the eighth game to book his place in the final.

Next up for the top seed is either Robin Haase or Martin Klizan. Kohlschreiber will contest his opener at the Olympics against Blaz Kavcic on Sunday.
